Nice Dreams (1981)
Hey man, this movie is lame man !
Only one scene worth anything in this movie and that is Cheech and Chong in the Insane Asylum getting heavily medicated by Dr. Timothy Leary the Counter Culture Guru who inspired hippies in the 1960s to "Tune in, Turn on, and Drop out) The rest of the story is as thin as ice during spring season warm up.
Cheech and Chong's Next Movie (1980)
What happened to Pedro DePacas and Man ?
Cheech and Chong are back but this time as themselves not as Pedro DePacas and Man. Paul Ruebens a.k.a. Pee Wee Herman also stars in this film. Cheech also plays his redheaded wild eyed loud and noisy Cousin Red who takes Chong a really wild night through Downtown Los Angeles. Cheech and Chong gave it there best shot with this film but did not hit hit the bullseye. If you look at the neighborhood that Cheech and Chong live in during the day shots you will notice that it is none other than the Universal Studios backlot. The house they live in is the house from Black and White movie classic "To Kill a Mockingbird". Paul Ruebens plays a stuckup snobby Hotel Clerk who at night becomes comedian Pee Wee Herman. The big bag of weed storyline got changed for Comedy Central tv and the new storyline is a big bag of diamonds that aliens come to Earth for, therefore figuring in the U.F.O. scenario at the end of the movie in the Marijuana field. Look for a small appearance by black comedian Michael Winslow before he starred in those Police Academy movies. His sound effects routine in the Welfare Office keeps this movie laughable. Anyway thats about all I can say about Next Movie except that it could have been better if C&C stuck with Pedro and Man.
Up in Smoke (1978)
Far Out Man !
"SPOILER ALERT"
This is the movie that started it all for the duo comedy act of Richard "Cheech" Marin and Thomas "Tommy" Chong. You get just the right mix of sex, drugs, and rock'n roll plus one pound of seedless stemless comedy that will leave you in stitches. This movie is actually based on the stage act created by C&C called "Cruising with Pedro DePacas and Man". But in the movie version Pedro meets Man and they smoke a giant joint, Pedro and Man go cruising for more weed and can't find any, they get accidentally deported to Tijuana and drive a van back across the border but they don't know that the van is made of 100% pure weed. They enter their band in a Battle of the Bands at The Roxy Theater and win and still they don't find any weed. Cheech and Chong's first film is totally far out. If you want to have a groovy time get a few buds together and plop this video in and let the high times and the good times roll.
Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (1977)
Anyone for a mess of momma's Barbeque ?
Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas is my favorite Christmas Special and I am glad to see in DVD. I saw this special as a kid in the early 1980s on HBO. HBO is the best ! I also grew watching another Henson creation on HBO and that was Fraggle Rock. When Emmet Otter was not available originally on video in the 1980s I always had faith that one day it would be and then in the late 1990s it finally appeared on video. Now in the early 2000's it is available on DVD. When I have a family of my own eventually I am going to share this Christmas Classic with my kids. Paul Williams did a wonderful job on the musical score. I wish the songs were available on CD. That would be awesome if they were available ! So I now have to wait for the cd to come out.
Young Lady Chatterley II (1985)
Not hot but mildly warm
Harlee McBride returns as Cynthia Chatterly and continues to make things hot on Chatterly Estate but this movie is mildy warm in comparison to the original. This movie was a Playboy Production and probably won't see the light of day on DVD unless Hugh Hefner gives permission. It would be nice though just for collectors sake alone.
Young Lady Chatterley (1977)
Still hot and sexy after 24 years.
I went out and bought this movie on DVD and was very very pleased to my senses to see that this copy is the original, uncut, unedited, copy that used to come on Cinemax and Showtime Late Night. It contains 2 movie trailers, a scrapbook of photos from the movie, and a Biography on Harlee McBride. The print still looks fresh but it still needs some more work for future releases. There a few scratches in the film that could use a digital erasing and the sound could use a Dolby Digital 5.1 upgrade. But untill then go out and buy this copy because it is still hot and sexy after 24 years.
Scrooge (1970)
Thank you very much for Christmas Movies
The same man responsible for the successful musical Goodbye Mr. Chips Leslie Bricusse, one year later in 1970 made Christmas Time musically fun. Albert Finney as Ebenezer Scrooge is hateful yet charming. This movie will get under your craw especially the 2 songs December the 25th and Thank You Very Much. When the trip into Hell was restored to television then to video, the movie's plot thickened nicely. I figured it took Ebenezer Scrooge one trip into Hell to change his way and his heart. His redemption in the end is so heart wrenching that you want to give him a big old hug and tell him Merry Christmas Mr. Scrooge. I can positively suggest this version to all families in the future.
Hoffa (1992)
This movie could have been better.
Nicholson and Devito delivered the goods just like the real Jimmy and his trucker friend Bobby did in real life. Jack Nicholson in the Jimmy Hoffa make up was Jimmy's exact lookalike. Granted this movie had its ups and downs but... it did what it was made to do and thats tell the story of one man who came from rough obscurity to go on to lead a nation of truckers to prosperity and in the end meet his eventual downfall and mysterious disappearance. It is not meant to be for the real Jimmy Hoffa to be found but this movie has shed some light on the man, the myth, and the legend.
