Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
2023 rewatch bumps this up a bit
My score was originally a 7 based on memory. I'm doing a rewatch of the MCU in chronological order and now, in hindsight, I need to bump this to a 9
My memory held the action sequences and Tommy Lee Jones, but somehow skipped the the kid that got bullied, the struggle to fit in and "serve his country ", the Agent Carter love story and first kiss and the struggle, realized or unspoken, between Bucky once being the hero and then being overshadowed by the guy he was protecting. Kinda makes the "The Falcon and The Winter Soldier" taste a little different now. From Hoboken to Spokane.... The star spangled man with a a plan ushered the way.
American Animals (2018)
From the opening credits...
.. it was made obvious that this wasn't "based" on a true story but was the true story
I'm often put off by the "based" on movies because the fictionilized story line is just that ... widely imaginative and sucks you in, but no where as deeply interesting or engaging as the actual truth.
I watch movies as a way to fill the void of drama in my life. I actively cultivated this lifestyle for survival but my human nature still has cravings. I can honestly say that this film got to me. The cringe, the uncomfortable, the disappointment, the hopelessness played by the actors were given another dimension by those that actually lived through it. Recommended to the true crime podcast fan and to great acting. I found this movie as a recommendation from watching Saltburn and Brian Keoghan.
Merry Little Batman (2023)
Exceeded my wildest expectations
It's actually good. I mean way better then I thought it was going to be
If you're expecting the typical bat story you'll be disappointed
It's not Adam West zap pow
It's not Tim Burton, Frank Miller, or something a true fan would pick up off the rack on Monday
It is the Kodachrome day dream you had after reading the latest issue when you were 8... with the Vandal and Kinks soundtrack you discovered later in life
Worth a watch for life long fans.and those that like comics because no matter how old you are you're still a kid that believes that when you grow up you could be the greatest superhero.
American Horror Stories: Bestie (2023)
Felt like it was a pretty decent movie that I fell asleep in the middle
A lot of interesting, good characters that didn't quite fully develop and a promising creepy story line that could've easily been a ninety minute movie winded up being an uneven, choppy fifty two minute one shot, dysfunctional episode. The watcher can waste far to much time on speculation as to why what was watched that any potential enjoyment of the story is lost on a mental tug of war after to over "huh" instead of savoring something that could've been great just leaves you frustrated. Basically a visual equivalent of a dissatisfying one night stand that left your place before the awkward morning breath reintroduction.
