Succession (2018)
Couldn't follow through
My first experience was: "Wow, what a banger!". Soundtrack, cast, characters' stories were quite appealing at first, but there was no huge development, so it has gotten sloppy and very boring towards season 2. The ending of s1 left a good impression on to how the story would continue further, but after two episodes of s2 there again were those stupid scenes with Tom and Greg that has grown obnoxious on me (not funny at all), and all the other characters remained the same (Kendall does stare for 12 hours straight). I guess if the show had some footages of what the RoyCo actually does (not only one amusement park in 12 episodes I've watched), or some backstory to characters, then it wouldn't be that detached from reality and as a result would've been much more thrilling and entertaining.
Funny, but not enough, dramatic, but not enough. Try to do everything and here you get a slow-paced average.
Whiplash (2014)
Pushing the genre to its limits
J. K. Simmons rocks, man. That was powerful. This guy is a legend only for this damn movie. Just watch it even if you're not entangled with music at all.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
They're all like puppets
Have you ever wondered why horror movies mostly aren't popular and highly rated? I think its because they lack the sense of connection between viewer and characters. This one tried to implement this "connection" and by my opinion failed poorly. Actors are pretty bad, dialogues are stupid, cliched and dull, characters dont feel like real people at all, they're just like puppets in this cringey mess. Ive noticed some okayish dialogue lines but there are too much bad things in this series that I was done by episode 2 (haven't even finished). I dont know why this crap got that much of a score.
Stalker (1979)
Slow but saturating
At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 18 1-6
Movie starts very slow, but every scene has its own soothing, peaceful effect on your thinking. You're watching and waiting for the next dialogue line - it happens - and the wait continues, allowing you to digest what you just heard. Every word is worth its wait!
There are 3 main characters - Pisatel (Writer), Professor and Stalker (Redrick Shuhart, Rijiy). They represent 3 social institutes - science, art and faith, each with their own views, beliefs and thoughts, which was depicted very well. While the book made mostly a political impact, Tarkovsky reimagined Zone from religious point of view, and I liked that very much. The movie may seem boring to most audience, but for those who read the book and are interested in Stalker universe, it will most certainly bring some new meanings and answers.
WolfWalkers (2020)
Charming
Right from the first minutes of this film you could feel kind, mystical atmosphere. Artstyle is quite interesting, this is a big thumbs up for a traditional 2D animation rather than modern 3D disney worlds. Along with music (which is stunningly well-done) it creates a warm aura of nature, childhood, friendship and family love. Tho there are some cliched moments like an faith obsessed evil ruler of the holy land, but it doesn't make this movie any less of a masterpiece. Great watch for everybody who likes peaceful, hearthwarming animation without any vulgarities.
This is my first Tomm Moore's movie, strange that I didn't hear about this guy before, gotta watch the other ones for sure!
Sleuth (1972)
Exceptional
How do you make a movie with this small of a cast in 1972 while constantly sustaining perfect English atmosphere of an incredible detective picture? This film is superb in everything:
Dialogues are top-notch, expensive choice of words and clever jokes never let you get bored.
Very good choice of music, funny "classical english movie" tones.
Actors are magnificent! Each one of them is able to show every sort of emotion like they're real people and not just players in this small theathre.
This is "THE CLASSIC FROM BACK THEN" that many people may be calling movies not deserving such name, skillfully written plot on top of everything listed above is doing its job! Stunning!
Odd Taxi (2021)
Zootopia but better
Right from the start, I had an absolute blast watching this one. Great storyline with blissful dialogues, jokes are original, you would never hear something like this in other shows, every character is top notch design-wise, beautiful art style and music. This is Zootopia on drugs, it doesn't fall into that Disney abyss of kinda childish jokes and the ending won't dissapoint you, they've done it so good that you could even put it in a list of the best endings ever. I guess this is what you can call "the modern days masterpiece", you never get bored, must watch for everybody!
American History X (1998)
Hatred promotes hatred
This is a sincere story about reality of human nature. Nothing good comes out of hating each other and being pissed off just for the sake of it. This movie is 23 years old and this racial nonsense continues to ruin people's lives even now. All this political stuff gets people excited, gets them "a place to be", a company to "promote your opinion", but does it make you happy at all? It takes everything from you giving nothing in return! Look at a case of Paul Miller, his life has been ruined by hateful dicks and now he became a hateful one too! People forget about their lives just to become "active" in something cruel and malevolent. This gotta stop!
Just about the movie: incredible dialogue writing, impressive actors, very good music and main idea. Would recommend this kind, heartwarming masterpiece to everyone!
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Great idea, bad execution
The main ideas of the series is what money can buy in this world, what makes your life worth living, what is the cost of a human life. That is by itself a very good bunch of thesises to build up. But when I was watching this show, I always felt that person that was developing characters isn't suited for it at all. All the characters are very generic and cliched. At some point you could cling to them, feel some connection, root for them, the next minute you already feel sick of seeing them as they are being ruined for the sake moving the plot further. This is a typical battle-royal where you know that this exact character could die because he isn't written well enough and haven't got any screentime, but that other dude will certainly die because he's on your screen just because they need people for this kind of story.
Having said that, there are still plenty of good moments (i.e. Episode "Gganbu" was really dramatic and this is great considering what I said above), very good quality of filming, interior of the scenes, costumes. Overall, this series is worth to watch, but beware of annoying stupidly written dialogues and poorly realised character progression. If you're okay with synopsis - go watch it! But that's not really any kind of masterpiece.
Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2019)
Dumbest morale ever
"Its time to shut down the machine" A. K. A. "We should stop promoting psychopats that are seeking for fame" and then proceeds to make a 3-hour mini-series about a psychopath and post it on Netflix. Best unintended joke ever!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005)
This show is for everyone, but...
I want to start by saying that this show is very great in bringing kind, natural atmosphere. All the characters are top-notch, especially Iroh, which is by my humble opinion the best elderly character ever written. Dialogue writing is EXTREMELY good, music fits very well into the scenes. This show is really something special, but there was also a bit of a disappointment for me.
First problem is childish jokes. And jokes themselves are not really a problem since this is meant to be primarily show for children, but punchlines in them could make even old people laugh. The issue here is that there are too much of them, even in very serious moments like war-action they still somehow inserted plenty of puns, which ruined atmosphere sometimes.
Second problem is the ending. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
They made the villain really stupid and awkwardly EVIL! He's so evil I almost started to laugh when he was present on the screen. There's almost no character development in Ozai, he's that cliched baddy that wants to destroy everything just because. But that's not all. I hate how they did every scene in the ending sequence, seriously. People standing ontop of a flying airships crushing into each other (I know this is fantasy world, but Sokka is not a magician!), this whole Aang vs Ozai fight was animated very bad, they just banged their powers while flying all around without any good music or thrill. Even Zuko vs Azula fight wasn't bringing any suspense while I was really hoping it would.
As a result, I could stand children atmosphere to get magnificently good dialogues and characters, but there's gotta be a limit to it. Would've been 10/10 if they kept it a little bit more serious and ending wasnt such a mess. But even with its flaws I would recommend to watch it to anybody, Avatar: The last Airbender is truly special and sincere title that is worth seeing.
