Tearjerker!
15 January 2021
I watched this film recently with my partner who thought it would be a good Sunday afternoon watch and would be light hearted. We are both animal lovers and it became clear early on that this was not light hearted and it became a difficult watch as you watch the dogs story unfold. You dont want to watch at times because it becomes painful but you do all the way to the sad ending!

It is a good film and prompted me to watch the Japanese version, the American one was based on the true story as was the Japanese one but this version is easier to follow and more relatable.

I felt compelled to find out more and discovered a book written about the "Loyal Dog Hatchiko" - Hachi - The Truth of the Life and Legend of the Most Famous Dog in Japan written by Mayumi Itoh. The book is very compelling and sets out to separate fact from fiction using evidence but also give the reader background on professor, journalist and other people associated with Hachi as well as some background on the times and culture in Japan at the time. The book is very detailed and you realise this film is a simplified version and is more of a summary.

I must admit that if you are easily upset or have sensitive children you will find this film difficult to watch and it will definitely leave you in tears.

Seen after watching Hatchi:A Dogs Tale (2009)

I watched this movie after seeing the American version (Hatchi: A Dogs Tale) with Richard Gere, as a dog owner it left a mark and I felt compelled to follow up on both films to see the true story.

I managed to find a book on Hatchi - The Truth of the Life and Legend of the Most Famous Dog in Japan by Mayumi Itoh. This book was just as compelling as the film and set out to confirm the facts from the fiction with amazing detail.

Hachiko Monogatari is the version closer to the true tale in most ways and you know the ending is going to be painful to watch but you watch it to the end anyway. This film also peeks into the culture at the time in Japan. If this film does not pull at your heart strings then nothing will.
