The Last of Us: Look for the Light (2023)
Good, but could have been better (spoilers)
First of all, I still believe it's a good episode, it had a lot of great moments, but those great moments lost a lot of their impact because of the problems in this episode. The biggest of the bunch was the pacing.
This episode felt really rushed at certain points. We get to the fireflies only halfway into the episode, and it barely gives time to really flash out the climax of this season, where Joel does some horrific acts. In the game, the segment is long and difficult, where you have to go around so many soldiers and kill them all, as you feel like a one-man army. They obviously couldn't have kept it the same, but while I still liked the way it was handled in the show, it was done way too short, and we never saw Joel take on many soldiers at once.
Outside of that, I was disappointed they removed a very important conversation from the game, where Ellie gives Joel a picture of Sarah, that was a very important moment in Joel's development, as before he rejected the same picture from Tommy, and removing that whole segment feels wrong.
And the last nitpick I have, is the final conversation. It felt, off compared to how the game handled it. They talked much faster, it didn't hold as much emotion, the conversation was changed in some ways that weren't the best (a really powerful line in the game from Joel is "I've struggled for a long time with surviving", and that line was completely removed), and some saddle changes that were made weren't the best.
Would I have enjoyed this episode more had I not played the game. Are many of my complaints random and dumb nitpicks, that don't make a lot of sense, perhaps. But those things did harm my experience of one of the best stories I have ever seen. The Last of Us is one of the best stories written out there, and in the game, those last few segments are some of the most impactful, powerful, and emotional things I've seen in fiction, so I can't help but feel disappointed when it wasn't done as good in the show.
Monogatari Series: Second Season: Hitagi Endo Sono Roku (2013)
A fantastic episode
Everything about this episode was amazing
The way to conflict was finally solved, the converstions between the characters, the different version of Kaiki's theme.
And the way the episode ended was actually insane and shocking.
A truly fantastic episode and the episode that solidified how great this season and series truly are.
Bakemonogatari: Tsubasa kyatto sono ni (2009)
A beautiful episode
This was an absoluty beautiful epiosde.
The first half was genuinely pretty god damn funny.
But the second half was just, beautiful, and there is no other way to put it.
Without a doubt the best episode so far.
Shinseiki Evangelion: Sekai no Chuushin de Ai o Sakenda Kemono (1996)
Started out great
This episode annoys me, most of the episode I believe is perfect, it has such a unique art style for the first 14 minutes and has really interesting themes. However, after those 14 minutes pass we get something really weird (which I do get the point I don't think was handled well), and then there was the final part of the episode was just... decent, nothing really special but nothing bad. It just felt kinda wrong.
Overall I believe this episode is good single handedly because of the first 14 min, that part was without a doubt a 10/10 in my opinion. It's just that what comes after is a 4/10.
Sangatsu no Lion: Chapter 20: Okura reta mono 1/Chapter 21: Okura reta mono 2 (2016)
The episode in which I fell in love with the show
While the previous episodes were still good, this is the episode that got me into the show. A fantastic episode with a wonderful match that dives deeper into the character of Rei.
