One Night (2023)
Truly Awful
I expected good things from this because of Jodie Whittaker, who is an actress I admire greatly. Well Jodie, not sure if you were just on holiday in Australia and was offered a few quid to show up in a low quality, low budget production or what but this series was terrible. Acting, cinematography and overall story telling was horrific. I saw it all through just to see the conclusion but what a complete waste of time.
Most of the Australian actors I'm pretty sure were from a few of the Australian soaps, or so my wife tells me. If this is the state of Australian production, I'm very sorry but I will avoid watching anything from there in future. Very very disappointed.
This Is Us: Family Meeting (2022)
I'm an emotional wreck yet again!
Have just finished watching this latest episode, Family Meeting. I'm in the UK and we have to wait 2 days until after it airs in the US so I'm always careful not to read any spoilers. It's hard to put into words how this show makes me feel, but as a man in his 50's it's one of the few things that has me in tears every week. I think it is all down to the fact that there are so many things that people relate to in this show as fundamentally it is about life and family. The juxtaposition here of your parents looking after you when you are growing up and then the whole thing being turned around on its head when you become old and in this case sadly afflicted with an awful disease is presented in an exceptional way. The acting, without exception, is also some of the best I have ever seen in any TV show and for me in particular, hats off to Sterling K. Brown who is absolutely fantastic. On a personal note, I have been thinking about my own mum who I lost nearly 10 years ago now. This show invokes so many personal memories in parallel to the actual story itself. Just brilliant in every way and I will be so sad when the series comes to an end in 2 weeks.
This Is Us: Don't Let Me Keep You (2022)
Another amazing episode
Here in the UK we have to wait 2 days until after the US showing so we get to see it on a Thursday. It never ceases to amaze me how the writers are able to tell this story and cover subject material that you can relate to you. Little things that I know will be different for everyone, but always something there for anyone who watches. I love the way it touches me and brings me to tears, weird as that may sound. The writing is incredible and Milo's acting in this episode was spectacular. Will be so sad when season 6 and ultimately the show has ended. Not going to post any spoilers but many things in this episode made me think of my own mother who I lost 10 years ago.
This Is Us: In the Room (2021)
Perfect Feel Good TV
I'm a huge fan of this show and we are now lucky to get this in the UK the day after the US. I did think that Season 5 got off to a bit of a shaky start, however after the last 3 episodes I am happy to report that This Is Us is back to its best. With everything that's happening in the world, this show is the perfect pick me up and this episode in particular was the perfect conclusion to a number of story threads. Kevin and Randall, the new 'big three' and I was blown away by the incredibly clever twist with the supposed new characters seen at the start of this episode. Well done to everyone involved. Superb.
Long Way Up (2020)
This is TV therapy at its best
As a huge fan of Long Way Down and Long Way Up I was hugely excited by this new adventure by Ewan and Charley. It is also something that finally persuaded me to invest in Apple TV.
I really don't understand some of the negative reviews on here.....would personally advise ignoring them and making your own mind up.
Part of what makes this so entertaining is that it's about 2 guys who are genuinely very close friends and who are passionate about their adventure. Ewan and Charley continue to come across as genuinely lovely people. The scenery is stunning and the places they travel through are really interesting. It also looks absolutely glorious in UHD.
Very highly recommended viewing.
