Three Godfathers (1936)
Third sound version
This is the best of the 3 sound versions. There is another version called Hells Heroes with Charles Bickford, Raymond Hatten and Fred Kohler. Tough movie like the Chester Morris version. I thought that the popular John Wayne version was weak after watching the first two movies
Perry Mason: The Case of the Screaming Woman (1958)
Another poor adaptation of a good Perry Mason book
I watched this one again a few nights ago and did not enjoy it. Again the writers changed everything. The book's defendant and killer are not even mentioned in this version. The book's victim is the doctor and has been changed from making money illegally to being a goody two shoes. The show's victim and defendant are not mentioned in the book. I know that Earle Stanley Gardner fought against CBS's earlier daytime version because they wanted to give Perry a love interest. He should have fought them over their adaptations of his great books.
Perry Mason: The Case of the Half-Wakened Wife (1958)
Other reviewers never read the book
I'm use to the television shows changing the whole concept of the Perry Mason books in order to fit the time slot. In this case they made the defendant in the book the murderer in the television show. The defender here has an almost non-existent role in the book. The book is a well written complicated plot with a lot of legal jargon. I did not care much for this show.
A Mind to Murder (1995)
Poorly adapted screenplay
PD James writes great mysteries and most of them have been turned into good movies. This one is the exception. The screenwriter assumed that he could improve upon a very good story and botched it completely. The book is a good tightly woven mystery with interesting characters. This version removes some of the interesting doctors and nurses and replaces them with kooky patients that you could care less about. It does not spoil the ending of the movie by stating that the murderer in the book is completely written out of this story. The veteran cast does well with the material that they have and Roy Marsden as Adam Dalglish is excellent as usual.
