Car Boys (2016)
Car Boys: A Subversive Masterpiece
Before I start my review, I'd just like to say that despite my love of Car Boys I do not condone any of Nick Robinson's actions nor do I wish to support him. That being said, separating the artist from the art, Car Boys is a subversive masterpiece that belongs in the Criterion Collection. No web series has ever made me feel this way. Throughout my experience with Car Boys, I felt awed, inspired, joyful and horrified all at once. Not to mention it's hilarious from start to finish. Not to get into spoilers, but I love Car Boys' lore. Car Boys is a rare example of a series that's story is not crafted ahead of time but is created as the show progresses, and it does this in an organic, extremely satisfying way. The only other thing I can think of that achieves this as well is The Adventure Zone: Balance, another McElroy product. Griffin McElroy is a genius, in both TAZ and Car Boys he acts as both storyteller and spectator, and is able to create a narrative right in front of you, inviting you to step into that narrative. And I implore you to accept that invitation. Watch Car Boys. There's no reason not to. If you can look at it with an open mind and step into the world of BeamNG.drive, I promise that you will ascend to the sun chips place.
