The Mountain Minor (2019)
May Appeal to a Limited Audience
Folksy and amateurish, it may appeal to a limited number of people who lick up any Appalachian flavored gravy set before them. The film would be better with professional actors. Also, the recordings sound a bit rough, even for old time standards.
The old time community at large would do well to get out of the habit of presenting music through nostalgia driven themes. Many old time traditional musicians struggle with the idea put forth over and over again that Appalachian music is something to be viewed through a lens of re-enactment or sentimental summoning of the past.
Appalachian music and culture is not sentimental. It is a vital and relevant culture that deserves a better platform than this movie gives it. I apologize if this seems like a harsh review for the good folks involved, but it is time to move away from the familiar tropes that do a disservice to Appalachian art, music, and culture. -doc
