Ka Pae Ranasingam (2020)
On of a kind
This heart wrenching social drama is all about a widow, her hardships and fight against a corrupted community to get back the body of her dead husband from foreign country.
Ka Pae Ranasingam is the most effective film to come out of OTT this pandemic season. This hard-hitting drama touches up on a serious socially relevant topic and leaves a lump in your throat at the end. A woman centric 3hour long journey carried forward by the towering performance of Aishwarya Rajesh. The exceptionally impressive act by the gifted young lady deserves more appreciation and attention from Kollywood. The last few minutes completely belongs to her. 'Makkal Selvan' Vijay Sethupathi has given his usual best, but the real problem is the forced romantic track and fight sequences to glorify the protagonist which becomes tedious at parts and deviates from the main plot. Rest of the cast blends into their characters neatly.
This story could've been told in a more poignant way which gets pined away by lengthy duration. It's deeply disturbing towards the end and I'm still not able to get over it.. This film would've made more difference if it had a theatrical release. Ka Pae Ranasingam is not flawless it has glitches all along its way but still it's worth a watch. Give it a shot.
Over Stretched but effective
Khaali Peeli (2020)
Please !!!
Khaali Peeli is nothing but an extension of those already proven mass masala entertainers. Bollywood is obsessed with telugu - tamil movies that even their tv channels are ruled by dubbed south indian movies. Khaali Peeli follows the same template of those timepass flicks but to be honest it's not as bad as it looks.
Khaali Peeli is the usual hero-heroine-villain chase with lots of guns, violence, and of course romance! If you're searching for something unique then this chase isn't for you. This bumpy ride moves at an uneven pace with a flat writing. Yash Kesarwani,Sima Agarwal duo's non-linear narrative confuses at most places but is unique especially the switching of timelines. The initial half of the film is a fun watch but sluggish presentation in the latter portion spoils the whole fun of this journey. Ishaan Khatter gets into the skin of the character smoothly and has given a noteworthy performance. He excels with his sizzling dance movies and is fierce in fight sequences. Ananya Pandey as the glam doll finds it hard to emote yet does a pretty decent job. Jaideep Ahlawat's baddie is nothing sort of different from those badly written commercial villains.
Khaali Peeli offers some well choreographed action blocks which would have created more impact if explored well. Songs act as a speed breaker and are not worth remembering. You can expect all the cinematic clichés in this old school popcorn entertainer. If you're into watching mindless formulaic entertainers then this debut venture of Maqbool Khan may impress you.
Halal Love Story (2020)
Why HALAL LOVE STORY
When the members of a popular Islamic organisation decide to make a telefilm, writer Toufeek played by Sharaf U Dheen along with other members assembles village members to act in the film helmed by Siraj played by Joju George.
Halal Love Story is a 'film within a film' . We have come across many movies of the same format including the critically acclaimed Jigarthanda. Here director Zakariya chose to play within his safe zone, the same what we witnessed in KL 10 and Sudani from Nigeria. The film opens up slowly showing landscape beauty of Malabar region and some of you may find it uninteresting that the narrative and dialogues are so rooted to the Malabar Muslim culture. The proceedings get back on track when the shooting episode starts with some genuine hilarious situations revolving around the shooting spot.
Among the bunch of acclaimed artists Grace Antony excels. It's good to see the talented actress getting meaty roles. Indrajith as the struggling artist and pompous husband was a real treat. Joju George , Sharaf U Dheen, Parvathy, Soubin and rest of the cast make a decent impact with their act. Zakariya has retained most of the faces from his last outing.
Halal love story is more like a satirical approach dealing with some of the conservative, orthodox minds and creates situational comedy out of religious absurdity rather than outright mocking. The bland, lustreless portions were saved by the quirky, subtle humour. Thanks to the breathtaking shots by Ajay Menon, the stupendous, colourful frames lighten up the mood of the film. Songs by Shahabaz Aman, Rex Vijayan, Bijibal, Neha Nair were soothing.
Halal Love may not cater to all sections of the audience. This heartwarming, funny tale by Zakariya is par below his former outing yet enjoyable considering its simplistic nature.
Nonsense (2018)
sense in nonsense
NONSENSE is a political film, a sports film, a campus film, and above all the politics of nonsense is the politics of humanity. That's what makes this film one of the best. NONSENSE speaks out against all racism, fascism and narcissism that exist in society today through the story told by +1 student Arun Jeevan. Nonsense contains all the beauty of cinema, not just political correctness. Although many say that it is straightforward, the film did not run in theaters because it was activated
