Splash, Too (1988)
Puddle Dive
'Splash' was my favorite movie as a small child. I even named my pet turtles Madison and Allen. So as you can imagine when 'Splash Too' premiered on TV you couldn't have found a more excited kid. Unfortunately I remember even then thinking there was something very wrong with this continuation. Skip ahead twenty years later; I find this unworthy sequel on youtube and decide to give it another chance.
My first and biggest gripe; where was the military? Remember the reason Madison and Allen left in the first place? Did the United States government and the rest of the world just forget that Allen Bauer broke the only living mermaid on record out of a government facility and then escaped into the ocean with her? They didn't even change their names! Eddie should have been in jail! Even if you ignore that inexcusable continuity error there are many, many other things wrong with this movie.
Amy Yasbeck and Todd Waring give decent Madison and Allen impersonations but they simply don't evoke the same chemistry or charm the original pair displayed. The dialogue is corny, and the characters are caricatures of their original counterparts. All that and slap a truly abysmal theme song on it and you've got yourself a real sinker.
The bottom line is that this is a perfect example of what happens when you try to continue a story that doesn't need to be continued. It should really be renamed 'Splash Too Much.'
Scar (2007)
Scar left its mark on me
I usually check a films rating on IMDb out before deciding to watch it. The rating combined with a few other details (writer, director, actors) usually helps me decide if its going to be worth my time. Luckily I'm an Angela Bettis fan or else I would have missed out on this sick little flick.
The killer was obvious before anyone had even died and there were some all too familiar horror clichés, but I found many scenes in the film to be brutally disturbing and I'm far from squeamish. Yes it was gory, but anyone who has searched out this film has most likely seen worse. The reason it seemed so brutal was really because of the characters and the situation they were forced into. I found the concept of being tortured until you give the word to kill a friend or family member to be sick and terrifying.
I've seen this movie compared to Hostel, but besides the gore, which was much milder than Hostel, I can't see the similarity at all. In Hostel you had a group of guys I personally couldn't care less about getting methodically tortured. I felt Scar invested more time into its storyline and some, though not all, of its characters which made it even harder to watch when they were viciously tortured and killed.
Bettis did a good job as usual and the film effectively disturbed me which is no easy task. All in all I'd have to say it was a decent little horror flick definitely worth a rainy day viewing.
