Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Thoughtful, Fresh Film
I don't understand the many negative reviews. I found the film to be a fresh approach to what could have been a predictable story.
Funny, sad, tragic and engaging. A thoughtful presentation that captures the complexity and inherent contradictions of wealth and power.
Solid acting, well crafted script, excellent cinematography make for one of the best films we've seen in a long time.
When we read the reviews of those who were "bored" watching, we weren't sure we viewed the same film. Because we found the movie riveting from start to finish. A most welcome perspective that kept our attention while we watched and had us talking after it concluded. Well done!
Pieces of Her (2022)
Unnecessary long, wandering storyline. Set in USA, but clearly filmed in Australia.
Filmmakers fell short on every front in this series. Way too long. Unnecessary, careless plot twists. Unbelievable story line that started strong in the first episode, then faded real quickly.
We found it disturbing that the series was set in the Southern USA, but all exterior location shots were clearly not filmed in North America. We had a bet that the series was filmed in either New Zealand or Australia (the actual country of filming). Location scouts could have tried harder to find Australian sites that looked more like the South. And actors vacillated in-and-out of American accents. Series would have been more successful set in Australia with the Australian actors speaking without inconsistent American dialect.
2000 Mules (2022)
Shameful. Quack Babble Masquerading as Scientific Research.
This movie is chock full of numbers, jargon, terms, and theory convolutedly and authoritatively presented to pass as scientific research for the uneducated. (All those fancy terms and big numbers must be true!) Garbage in. Garbage out. Too many fundamental problems with the "methodology" and "findings" in this very flawed presentation to note here. No peer-review researcher or scientist would attach themselves to the conspiracy theories masquerading as science. Only the truly gullible and obtuse would fall for the reprehensive pseudo-analytic, wacked-methodological and unsupported conclusions in this film. Regrettably, I fear, many will.
The Tourist (2022)
A Head Scratcher: Why Would Anyone Make This Series?
The only mystery in this series is why anyone thought it would be a good idea to film this disaster of a show. The Tourist is a train-wreck of a series with an ill conceived plot, unnecessary juvenile twists and unbelievably absurd reactions to events. (For example, a bomb explodes in a small outback town and is treated like an inconsequential event not worthy of investigation by police.)
Script reads like it was written in an hour, on the back of a napkin at a bar before last-call -- poorly drafted, chock-full of cliches, stereotypes and embarrassing dialog.
We gave it 2 stars. One star for Jamie Dornan because he's great to look at, but that's it. Hard to discern if all the actors are bad (and I mean really bad) or the writing is an albatross around all of their proverbial necks.
We gave another star for the refreshingly original Greek storyline. It was a unique and interesting concept that we don't see in American productions. But they had no idea how to develop it, so like everything else in the series, falls flat.
Color blind casting, "au courant" interracial love storyline, and no discernable connection between any of the characters added to viewer disconnect. The decision to cast a mixed race black actress and not an indigenous Australian, was insulting. It seemed as if the production team checked the box for diversity in casting - with the arrogant belief that all people of color are blindly interchangeable.
Cinematography in the outback is well done, but not enough to save this series. This was truly one of the most unwatchable programs we've watched. Slogging through the six tedious, poorly crafted episodes left us asking one question, "Why would anyone make this catastrophic fiasco?"
The Hustle (2019)
Unwatchable
Usually like Anne & Rebel -- not in this. Anne's accents were beyond disturbing -- had to even focus on the (poor) plot. If you are looking for Rebel to be funny ... select another film. 90+ minutes I can never get back.
