Special Agent Oso: For Tamales with Love/Pinata Royale (2011)
there are some famous voices here.
Rita Moreno plays Abuela... mid episode she peeks around a corner and hollers - 'Hey you Guys!' hah, those parents old enough to remember The Electric Company will have gotten that reference right away XD Apart from that, it's basically your typical Oso episode; problem, three special steps and solution. This episode does help illustrate how mainstream Latin American culture and language has become in the United States; it focuses on making tamales and teaches them about masa etc. Oso is voiced by Sean Astin whom many of you will know as being Frodo the Hobbit's best Friend Sam Gamgee. Now for those of you from the same generation as those of us who have recognized the Hey you guys reference- Sean Astin was also a key character in The Goonies
Janie (1944)
entertaining period movie
I usually find movies of this era a little too slow or dull, this one kept me. It was humorous and well paced, nostalgic. Nothing too serious, but not too goofy either. Of course the girls were all immaculately dressed and the costumes and scripting for phrases was excellent. The premise was the same as what they use to build sitcoms today, Small town girl has beau that she has grown up with, romantic older fellow in uniform sweeps her off her feet, girl is torn between childhood ties and grownup romance...girl plans small affair while her parents are out, huge crowd shows up, party ensues and is broken up by the police and all of the characters still love each other in the end; all of the little side plots are happily resolved and that's the end. Good family film. (doesn't Janie look remarkably like Geena Davis?!?)
