Khela (2008)
A Good watch
This movie springs a real surprise in many ways, the film is a departure from director Rituparno Ghosh's pet subjects which generally revolves around a lead female protagonist with intense, passionate drama unfolding but here its a film on a male protagonist, an idealist filmmaker Raja(Prasenjit Chatterjee) and his quest to cast and than to make a film with a boy whom he thinks is perfect for the role and the subject is dealt in a lighthearted way bordering on humour.Abirup the boy(Akashneel Dutt) and Raja the director develop a heart warming bond from the time they first meet through the making of the film.
Meanwhile as flashbacks(of Raja) comes in the personnel life of Raja and his wife Sheela(Manisha Koirala) their disturbed marriage due to Sheela's longing for a child which Raja feels will compromise in the artiste within him is linked in the film with Raja rediscovering the child within him while directing Abirup.
The film is marked with interesting twists and turns with certain humour, interesting characters and more importantly just the right chemistry with all the actors.Performances are the soul of this movie Prasenjit has got just the correct expressions(he generally goes overboard)for this one,Manisha Koirala is brilliant she has underplayed her character beautifully, the character could have turned intense and dramatic too had she overplayed it,Raima Sen(Anjali, the fashion designer of the film in the making) has been given a simple role of todays women and she is good as usual but the film completely belongs to Akashneel Dutt,he luminously shines as Abirup overshadows every actor in every scene! He is so good.Direction and screenplay of the film is different from Ghosh's earlier work but its a refreshing change.
Its a must watch for all who love Rituparno Ghosh's cinema.
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
India.....we love u
India, incredible India.........yes this tourism commercial can summarize this little gem, well not little anymore.......its huge! Awards ,accolades it deserves all, one of the FINEST FILMS OF ALL TIMES.
The film is about Jamal, the lead protagonist portrayed by the gifted Dev Patel, a slum kid from India's dream city Mumbai, its about his journey from being a ''slumdog'' from slums to a ''millionaire'' in the hit television show, the Indian version of ''Who wants to be a millionaire''.
A true rags to riches story-one of the best of its kinds, the movie captures the audiences in a pulsating drama filled with love, action and various emotions, anger, fear, nervousness, songs and dance too!.......in a true blue Bollywood fashion.
True depiction of modern India, the film set in India's maximum city Mumbai, the dream city, It shows the optimism Indians feel in todays hard times.
Danny Boyle is more Indian than Indians! He captures modern India like never before,at least in recent times. The film excels in all fields camera,acting,background,music......all blend to makes this beautiful film.
Don't MISS IT!
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Interesting and Beautiful
Being an avid history student i went with great excitement to see this movie and must say director Ashutosh Gowaraiker hasn't let me down ,although historically i found few flaws but Indian history is a debatable subject so no minus points for it but wish it had shown all the navratnas of the court of Akbar the great, including mine favorite the great Tansen who has contributed to Indian music tremendously. The main theme of the film is Hindu-Muslim unity which is highly applaudable. As usual the the music by AR Rehman is Fantabulous including my favorites 'khwaja mere khwaja' and 'Manmohanna' as i myself am a Krishna bhakt and a murid or devout of Garibnawaz these songs are spiritual for me, also 'azemohshan' and 'jashnebahara' are flawless and soothing but my favorite being 'in lamhoin ke daman mein' which is highly recommended for all the love birds. Ashutosh's direction is brilliant, cinematography is vibrant and colorful but is also very subtle, screenplay is poignant, lyrics by Javed Akthar reminds me of the great Kaifi Azmi Saab the 'Manmohanna Bhajan' is a Classic and will be sung in many shree Krishna temples, choreography is another highlight of this film...beautiful.Action too was good according to Indian standards, But the main highlight of the film for me is its costumes and art direction which will cement this film as a classic.
Performances are also extremely believable with Hrithik Roshan shining as Akbar and Aishwarya Rai also has given a subtle performance.Other supporting cast also does well with special mention of Ila Arun and Kulbhusan Kharbanda.
This film is a must watch for those who has an inclination towards Indian culture and history and for fans of Hrithik-Aishwarya individually and in a couple like me this is in any way no less than a gift. THANKYOU ASHUTOSH...AND TAKE A BOW!!! u deserve it.
