The World Beyond (1978)
FINALLY!!!
SPOILER!!! I have been trying to figure out what the name of this movie for YEARS! This one and the Trilogy of Terror episode with the tiki-doll scared me to death as a kid. I totally remember the "mud monster" (that's what I called it) using the ground to regenerate. I also remember the hand getting cut off in the door-frame. I remember the hand gets cut off and it somehow makes it way to the basement. They go into the the basement later to get something and the hand (which is on one of the steps) grabs one of them and the struggle. A shelf gets knocked over and a bag/jar of salt is spilled on the hand and it catches fire. You then hear the creature screaming from somewhere on the island because it can feel its hand on fire. They then figure out that salt will kill the creature. The decide to use of themselves as bait to lure the creature into chasing them. The tie a rope between two trees and during the chase the creature is tripped into the salt-water and is destroyed. Wild movie...
Gangs of New York (2002)
Worst Movie of 2002
OK...let me just say right off the bat that this one of the WORST movies I have ever seen in my life!!! The movie was an hour and half TOO long, I cared NOTHING for the characters and the plot was so thin a hard sneeze would have collapsed the whole thing. The reason for the RANT is the fact that I WASTED my money on this TRIPE instead of spending it on The Two Towers!!! ARGH!!!!
The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
Left me wanting more...
Having grown up in West Virginia (Parkersburg, about 45 minutes north of Point Pleasant on the Ohio River), I am quite familiar with the sightings of the Mothman and the stories relating to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. The movie did an excellent job of scaring me in all the right places. However, I was disappointed that the movie focused more on John Klein and less on the Mothman and the sightings. I wanted the film to be more of a pseudo-docu-horror. More on the people who saw the Mothman and where the sightings took place and less on John Klein. I am very happy that the typical West Virginian stereotypes were left out of this film. Kudos to Laura Linney for not sounding like a complete hick. I was glad to see that they were able to film in a locale very similar to Point Pleasant. Having passed through the city hundreds of times on trips up and down Route 2, which passes right through city, it was well represented on screen. Go see this film, the ending alone was well worth the price of admission!
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Worst movie of 2001
I happened to catch "Planet of the Apes" on PPV last night. I was quite excited because I had missed my chance at the box office. Boy am I glad I didn't waste my money buying a ticket. This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. There is no plot, no character motivation, no life, no story thru-line to carry the picture and the ending is so bad, it reeks of a low-budget, straight-to-video, sci-fi flick. I am a HUGE fan of Tim Burton and I think he is one of the most brilliant directors Hollywood has to offer. In fact, "Sleepy Hollow", in my opinion, is his best film to date. But POTA is a film that could best be described as never-should've-happened. Why does Hollywood see the need to remake classic, highly rated films and turn them into pure trash? This is one film that should NOT have been remade or reimagined or whatever you wish to call it. Why can't Hollywood remake films that were terrible when they were FIRST released instead of doing things the other way around??? The screenplay for this film is drenched with cheesy dialogue. (In one scene, David Warner tells his daughter, Helena Bohnam Carter to wash her hands before dinner after she has been touching humans!!!) The writers saw fit to throw every kind of silly convention of humor that one could relate to humans and apes at the screen and expected us to eat it up. This is one viewer who wishes he could make the writers eat their own words!!! Save you money and rent something else.
