Jump Tomorrow (2001)
Very well made first-time out for both director and star
We saw this last night in pre-release at a special program with Jeffrey Lyons and Roberta Barrows. The star, Tunde Adibempe, joined them for a Q & A session after the screening. Joel Hopkins has re-made his NYU senior thesis short (Jorge) into a full length engaging, warm comedy/love story that rings true for all the right reasons. It is low budget but not cheaply made. The production values (particularly the music) are all first rate and there is an unbilled (very brief) cameo appearance by Amy Sedaris.
Tunde Adibempe is such a natural and relaxed actor. He has great obvious affection for physical comedy and has the natural stoic looks of Peter Sellers to boot. This means that he can act as if he is almost part of the audience looking at what is happening around him on-screen with quizzical mystery. It is very hard to believe that prior to this role he had absolutely no screen experience.
