Spaceman (2024)
Style over Substance. Waste of a fantastic movie set.
Firstly we're witnessing events, political structures, and a timeline that differs from our own. The panels and devices in the spaceship and at mission control environment hark back to the 1960's and 70's - lots of physical switches and push buttons with lights that would appear at home in the original Star Trek series with the exception of a single laptop computer that was a truly misappropriated item. The visuals from the communication systems - projection screens that seemed like they were processed onto film in real time was a creative twist that again reveal methods from an era situated in our past. Event the Czech net Quantum Phone, a faster than light communications device that is beyond our current capability needed to be hard wired into a handset as Sandler moved throughout his ship following a failure of the radio comma.
The floaty/twisty motion of Adam Sandler's character through the ship was convincing as it challenged frames of reference when there is no absolute direction, just those defined by the configuration of the tube and contributed to what has been coined as a "trippy" experience.. The external scenes and dreamscapes pulled from Sandler's memories also bring an ethereal feel.
Unfortunately the actual movie plot was as trite as they come and very poorly written. Even when we suspend belief regarding why a single astronaut was chosen for this mission above a crew to conduct the exploration mission, it's obvious that Sandler's character makes no sense other than he is selfish with career and experience goals, as many Type A personalities are. The awkward change in Sandler and his realizations due to Hanus's probing are silly rather than deep.
The beginning is the end,
