The Continental (2023)
I don't get the love
I must preface this by saying I greatly enjoyed the first 2 John Wick movies. This series is just awful. The plot is all over the place and the characters are unlikable, I mean, are we supposed to sympathize with the lead because he's fighting the rich? I was actually rooting for Mel Gibson's character, overlooking his horrendous accent. The set is perpetually dark (I assume to hide the choreography) I couldn't even bother to care. I'm usually the one in the family that has to explain what's going on but I just wasn't interested enough to pay attention. There could be some interesting stories in the John Wick universe but this isn't it. I really hope they don't continue this series, it's embarrassing.
Invitation to a Murder (2023)
Just, No.
I wanted to like this. I couldn't wait to see it. Now, I just wish I had watched something else. Disappointing to say the least. Have the writers ever seen a good who-dunnit? As for the characters, good grief! The lead was horrible, I'm not familiar with her so I'm hoping it was just this movie making her look bad, for her sake. Her character was annoying and I'm not sure why any of the other characters even listened to her. I didn't care about any of them so it was pretty useless. The confession at the end was ridiculous. I really hope they don't make a sequel. They should apologize to Agatha Christie.
Nancy Drew (2019)
Annoying
I watched the first and second season. Unfortunately, I just can't talk myself into liking the lead. The way she is written makes her an annoying brat who thinks her way is the only way and uses everyone around her. I feel like the writers are trying for a supernatural Veronica Mars and it doesn't work. I like the other characters but Nancy just kills it for me. She treats the adults around her like crap, unapologetically lives rent free not to mention her and her friends never actually work. How is the restaurant still in business? The plots just zoom along going from slightly interesting to all out ridiculous. On a whiny side note: it's pronounced "Portents" not "Porents"
The Lost Tree (2016)
At least it was free to watch
WTHeck? With Lacey Chabert and Michael Madsen I figured I'd give it a try. I'm not sure how one would get paid for writing good reviews but sign me up. Obviously, someone was paid. Now, I'm no film connoisseur but even I noticed the horrible music, way too much! It was a little creepy when it showed the shadow people but the main character made such idiotic choices I just couldn't continue to care. Who decides to stay in a rental where the former tenants left all their crap and disappeared? When you see shadow people over and over but just decide to take a nap? By the last 10 minutes I was playing chess on my phone.
Father Christmas Is Back (2021)
Puts the fun in dysfunctional
So, it's not a sweet, sappy Christmas movie. The sisters are all about as different as can be and each one was affected by that Christmas 25 yrs ago. It keeps you interested in what's going to happen next. The usual mishaps, reminiscent of Christmas Vacatipn, are in abundance and the scenery is beautiful. The ending, with the truth finally coming out, is surprisingly touching and well acted. Give it a watch, don't listen to the grinches 😉
Chapelwaite (2021)
Don't listen to the Fox "news" fans
I love this series. Every actor is great, in my opinion. You actually care about them, even the less than nice ( I'm looking at you, Minister's wife)
The scenery and atmosphere are spooky , especially with the eerie sounds announcing the evil ones. Quite a few scares and some true horror, especially in the later episodes. Brody was a great choice for the lead, I can't say I recognize anyone else except Philip Boone who also does a great job. I look forward to the next episode every week and I rewatch them all week long. I'm glad I'm not like some of these others that see politics in everything coming out of Hollywood, how sad for you. Just watch a good old fashioned horror series and shut the hell up. If I have to criticize, I will say that some of the dialog is a little wooden, or maybe just some of the lines are awkward. When both Honor and Abel use the same line "I didn't mean to offend you" it just seems so out of place. And I know this is Hollywood and I'm not a writer but does every story have to have a supremely disagreeable child? It's understood, she's angry at her father for what she thinks is his fault regarding her mother's death and her lame leg. I was sort of hoping we'd seen the end of her :) Besides my nitpicking, this is a super fun and creepy series and I'm really impressed with Epix.
Dear Christmas (2020)
I didn't even miss the extras
I really enjoyed this movie. A few scenes made me laugh out loud even after multiple viewings. The sets are beautiful, the family's cute and the storyline isn't the usual "save the family business/defeat the local Scrooge" type so prevalent in made for TV movies. I'm not sure why there is such confusion regarding Natalie's podcast. If, like me, you've read the other reviews for this movie you'll notice a theme. What is the name of Natalie's podcast? Why do they keep switching from one title to another? (sigh) if you pay attention it isn't complicated. The podcast is titled Holiday Love. The episode she is working on in the movie is called Dear Christmas. I assume there is an episode or two for each holiday. The wonderful Melissa Joan Hart never ceases to entertain and is joined by a super cast playing her family and her love interest. I honestly didn't even notice the lack of extras until another reviewer mentioned it. Personally, 50 or 60 shoppers wandering a small town Main St was always annoying to me. It's just not realistic.
Natalie speaks about true love in her podcasts but not from personal experience. She goes home for Christmas and meets a man from her childhood. She ends up in various situations with him, spending most every day doing something together. As Christmas approaches she begins to question her feelings for him.
You'll just have to watch to see what happens next.
I rewatch movies that show situations I would like to be in, houses and families I would enjoy spending Christmas with, because that's pretty much what we're doing, right?
I'm looking forward to adding this movie to my holiday dvd collection 🎄
