I grew up dirt poor, running wild across the river in Council Bluffs. I've always been sure had I stayed I never would have got out of poverty. But we did not have to worry about guns and police. Omaha is a very segregated community maybe no longer by conscious design that most people can remember but it's there all the same. You only have to drive through the town while looking at stats to see the whole stew of inequity. It's not just heart breaking, it's wrong and it has to change.
