XO, Kitty (2023)
Sweet, easy watch
I know this show is getting some hate but not really sure why. I respect peoples' opinions and maybe it's not everyone's thing but I just thought it was a sweet show and easy to watch.
I get that the miscommunications at first were a bit infuriating but this kind of thing is really common (and worse) in Japanese TV shows, so I would guess it may also be a K-Drama trope.
I thought all the characters were reasonably relatable as teenagers, with all their mixed up teenage emotions. I have no problem with the love square, although I'm team Min Ho all the way, and it was nice to have bi representation (plus her dad being so supportive of her). I enjoyed the fact that the show focused so much on the emotional side and didn't have a weirdly sexual focus like a lot of teen shows.
The low stakes mystery was fun and it was nice to see Kitty being able to connect with her mum.
Was it cheesy in places? Sure. Was it groundbreaking? No. But it surpassed my expectations for what it was. All in all it was just a nice show.

Different experience to the movie
The important thing to know about this show is that it isn't the movie. I think a lot of the negative reviews are people who loved the movie and were disappointed as a result.
The TV show is slower paced, more character focused and more nuanced than the movie. If you loved the movie for the action, you might enjoy the show less. I'm not a big fan of action but really loved the concept of the original movie, so the TV show has been a win win for me.
You might read some reviews criticising this show for turning the plot of the movie into a murder mystery or detective drama. I respectfully disagree. I don't think the show should be taken at face value. I truly believe the detective angle is a plot device. We're only 4 episodes in. I believe there's more to come and I'm excited about where it might go.
The last thing I'd like to address is the handful of reviews calling this "too PC." I strongly disagree with this. If anything I think the movie was more "PC" in the sense that it's message was something along the lines of "poor people good, rich people bad." The show has more layers. It explores the motives of the different classes a lot more. I found myself liking even some of the characters I felt I ought to hate.
I honestly think the "too PC" crowd is annoyed that the main character is now a black guy instead of a white guy which is, quite frankly, racist and ignorant. There's no reason the main character should be white. If anything it's more believable that he's a POC given that this is a reflection of our society and he comes from "the tail." I really liked the actor for this role.
Overall, a great show and a really interesting concept, but a very different experience from the movie, so you might need to go into it with an open mind.
