Chappie (2015)
This is really bad...
I love Scifi movies and series, so with the pretty good IMDb ratings for Chappie, I was ready to enjoy myself. But oh my, what a bad film this is. I liked the visuals and the... no, wait, that was pretty much it.
One thing that stood out the most for me was the embarrassingly bad acting. The one exception was Hugh Jackman but his character was completely over the top and pretty ridiculous. And why Sigourney Weaver was there is a mystery, she was pointless. All the others turned in cardboard performances. None of the characters came alive and I couldn't care less what happened to them. The story could have been interesting but wasn't. In fact, the story didn't really begin until an hour and a half into the movie. Before that it's basically mostly people running around and screaming foul language. And the things a viewer is made to believe, like a die-hard female suddenly, from one moment to the next, having strong maternal feelings for a robot, reading him stories of some sheep? Come on!
One star.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Delightful surprise
I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise. I don't like his "I'm the hero who saves the world" attitude. He's a famous movie star and he knows it and seems to bring that knowledge to every part he plays. So, it was with some reluctance that I settled in for Edge of Tomorrow. And was pleasantly surprised.
It was a delight to see Cruise as a scared, even cowardice major in the US army who is in public relations because he can't stand the sight of blood, "not so much as a paper cut" as he himself says. He is then forced into combat as a private and the scenes that follow are priceless and show how fine an actor Cruise really is. He was funny too, I laughed out loud at many a scene during that first day of combat. Of course, as the day repeats itself, Cruise learns more and more and in the end he does save the world. But by then he had made me fall in love with him so much that it didn't matter. Plus we where with him every step of the way, and that makes all the difference.
There are some great supporting roles as well. Emily Blunt is wonderful. So is Bill Paxton. The other, minor roles, are all great as well.
9 stars
House M.D.: Help Me (2010)
How can it not be an hallucination?
This is one of the great episodes of the series, but the end has got to be a hallucination. How could it not be? House left the crash scene, leaving Cuddy behind. The injured woman dies in the ambulance, and after arriving at the hospital House leaves for home, enters the bathroom, gets the pills and sits down. Then, out of nowhere, Cuddy enters.
Where did she come from? How did she get there? How did she know where to find House? Why is she dressed like that? It's obviously cold outside, but there she is, not wearing the coverall, not wearing a coat. Nothing of this makes sense. Nor do her words. Why would she all of a sudden show up in House's bathroom, declaring her love for him? It simply makes no sense. This is House hallucinating. The fact that he has the two Vicodin still in his hands means nothing. That too is part of the hallucination.
Now, I understand how people are romantic and want House and Cuddy to end up together. But it happening like this goes against everything the series has shown us of House and Cuddy. It really does make no sense.
My prediction of the first episode of season 7: House hallucinated and we see him back chez dr. Noland again.
