IMDb on the Scene - Interviews: John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
An uninspiring follow-up to the third film
I loved John Wick 3, I loved it so much I even went to see it twice in the cinema. So, I was undoubtedly excited for this film. Unfortunately I left the cinema this time around feeling disappointed, like something was missing. There were two main issues in this film that took away from what made John Wick 1, 2, and 3 so good:
Issue 1: This film doesn't take itself as serious as the others. Now John Wick at its core is an unrealistic concept, you have one dude taking on waves of enemies and doing so with relative ease. Despite this however, the first three John Wick films managed to take themselves somewhat serious and give it a realistic sort of feel. I believe they did this by showing the audience how feared John Wick was, therefore it was somewhat believable that Wick can cut his way through any amount of them as they feared what he was capable of.
In the fourth installment, they decided to go for a more comical approach. In this film, Wick takes on hundreds of enemies who don't pose a threat to him at all. They simply toned down on the quality of fighters/assassins in front of Wick and heavily increased the quantity in front of him. The entire film is just Wick taking on waves and waves of these braindead zombies that walk towards him shooting even though they have the high ground over him. Wick also jumps out of a 7-storey tall building and survives by hitting the roof of a van, he gets hit by cars going high-speed and walks away like it's nothing, and his fancy Kevlar suit essentially makes him invincible as long as he doesn't get hit in the head.
There was numerous times in my cinema screening when the audience laughed at a scene not for the comedy but just for how ridiculous it was. John Wick 4 is like when you activate invincibility and infinite ammo cheats on a video game and just start going wild on NPC's.
Issue 2: The story line was really not what I expected and drifted too far from the third film. The third movie was about the Table coming after John and it felt as though they were setting up the fourth movie for John to go after the Table. Instead what we got was John going after some random villain that they just introduced in this film who you really don't care too much about. I was looking forward to see John go after the Table, a group who were referenced through out all films and we still didn't get to see in this film.
Summary: Not what I expected and a big disappointment.
