Himitsu no hanazono (1997)
First rate comedy about the pursuit of a dream.
Sometimes billed as 'My Secret Cache', this hilarious struggle by a young bank teller will really keep you laughing. Excellent production, awesome scenery, and a heartfelt insight into a dreamer and her pursuers. I can't wait until this is out on DVD.
Heat (1995)
We all have life priorities - here's a spectrum.
The highlights of this film are the character development (the movie is just the right length) and the depth of the acting of Dennis Haysbert. Dennis tells a complete story in only a handful of scenes. Someone give this guy a leading role.
Ashley Judd did well with this character but I recommend you see 'Where The Heart Is' to see her dynamic range. Val Kilmer's best performance yet. The writing and his performance in his last scene with Judd is outstanding.
You'll get another serving of type casting of De Niro, Pacino, Voight, Sizemore, Levine, and Portman. Portman's angst could have been more deeply explored. She would have swept you up as she did in 'Leon', making Pacino's character deeper. Alas...
The lighting was quite well done except for the blatant timing errors in the last scene: jets don't have rear-facing landing lights.
I'm a harsh critic, yet I have chosen to include this in my personal library.
