Recep Ivedik (2008)

Don't be put off by despising comments; it's really funny. Watch it and have your own opinion.

I really enjoyed this film. I had some doubts (prejudice rather) about it previously, due to a lot of people around me despising it. Therefore I haven't seen it until I saw bits of the sequel, and realised that I've really missed out on a remarkably funny movie. Yes it has elements of toilet humour, balls humour etc... But it's a comedy and it's bloody funny! The fact that some people of more "ordinary" taste in cinema might enjoy it too does not make it a lousy movie. Obviously it's not up there with the best of its genre, but it does what it says on the tin. Sahan Gokbakar has created a rather primitive character that is all but too familiar to Turkish audiences, thanks to similar movies and -what the heck- the man on the street! But the character also has a genuinely funny (not talking about the toilet humour) and sometimes surprisingly intelligent side to him.

I have a good taste in movies, but I'm not ashamed to say that I really enjoyed the 100-minutes I spent watching Recep Ivedik. I must say though, that it primarily appeals to a Turkish audience who would be familiar with the context. It may be perceived as a low-budget Borat copy by others.

The Happening (2008)

Watch trains pass rather than watching this movie!

I'm really amazed by M. Night Shyamalan's ability (!) to direct so many bad movies consecutively. I'm seriously thinking that he must have taken performance enhancing drugs while filming The 6th Sense! How else can you explain the fact that he manages to direct movies that get worse day by day?! It looks to me as if he comes up with these bright (!) ideas that doesn't make any sense, and because of that the movies don't really have satisfactory finales. Then, we -the audiences- are left to interpret in our own ways what really happened or what could happen next. I watched this movie on the plane, only because Mark Wahlberg was in it, but really shouldn't have... I'm only spending time now writing this comment, because I'm frustrated that there are still people actually paying to watch movies like these, only to encourage their incompetent directors to make more of the same trash!!!

There's no solace for my £12.50!

I'll keep it nice and short for you. I'm a keen movie-goer and I'd like to think think that I have an above-average IQ. However I did not understand this film, and I heard the same comment from a lot of people! I thought Casino Royale was bad, but it sort of grew on me a little bit after a few watches. But this is something else. I had really big expectations of this film, as I'm a big fan of Marc Forster's. Obviously I was even more disappointed that he of all people has managed to make one of the worst Bond movies ever!

Then there's the usual abundance of sponsors' goods of course! Mobile, laptops, cars etc... It's more like watching an extended commercial than a movie! Overall... Big disappointment!

No, it's a good movie!

I appreciate that the movie may have disappointed those who have watched the TV series. Unfortunately (or perhaps luckily) I didn't watch the TV series and I really liked the movie. I think that's it… The TV series could have been better, but I think the film requires more credit than given in some comments here. First of all Robert Downey Jr is as "Robert Downey Jr" as ever! He's brilliant and he certainly delivers. I also loved Mel Gibson (cleverly named Gibbons in the movie!) in a movie for the second time since Million Dollar Hotel, where –again- he was not in a typical "Mel Gibson" role. OK, it's not the best movie I have seen, but it's really well put together and wonderfully acted. It certainly is worth a watch. Unless you have seen the TV series apparently!

Silent Hill (2006)

A must-see for horror movie fans
13 October 2006
I haven't played the game, but I think this is definitely one of the best horror movies made in recent years. I have been longing for a movie like this, since I have seen The Ring. The atmosphere is really creepy and the monsters and effects are the best I have ever seen. I hate CG effects and funny monsters that have ruined many movies that could have been much better had the monsters been designed as good as in Silent Hill. Sound effects are great too, and there's no sudden "boo" to startle you as in cheap horror movies. Script is well thought and everything makes sense in the end. So, it doesn't leave you puzzled nor prepare some basis for a sequel. It is overall a very satisfying horror movie, and absolutely worth the two hours you spend watching it.
