Data Mining the Deceased: Ancestry and the Business of Family (2017)
Great doc about a serious problem!
I found the documentary an interesting take on a topic about privacy and genetics that is not discussed enough. Julia's documentary highlights important information about the business behind the online genetic market. We see real life stories about how finding your ancestry and viewing your genetic info is important to someone, however, she also touches upon the risk associated and potential misuse of this information.
It would have also been interesting to see not only the negative attributes of the increasing technology behind the genetics field, but also some potential benefits outside of the public getting answers to their questions. A future step picking up from this documentary may include researching the extent these companies go through to hide how they actually use our information. In addition a bigger focus on the genetics component of this research may have been beneficial for the viewer, however, I understand her main focus was on the ancestry side of online databases.
