The Artful Dodger (2023)
Dickson crossed with the history of germ theory
I'm a few episodes into this show and it's well written and cast. I love to see so many great Australian actors in this production, especially seeing as it's set in Australia.
The character of Dodger is flawed, smart and funny and the governess daughter is the perfect foil for him, showing him the empathy and compassion that he didn't grow up with.
It is also cool that this show is set during such an important time of the development of germ theory, the importance of hygiene in the prevention spreading infectious diseases and the early phases of preventing death by sepsis from bacteria.
It's also just a fun show to watch with great characters, funny situations and some good drama.
Not Dead Yet (2023)
I've watched the entire 1st season
This show gives me everything I want in a 22min comedy, laughs and the feels. I love Nell as she's such a real person who's dealing with life after a hard break up and is just doing her best. She's not perfect, but still likeable. Her roommate is hilarious and sweet, and all supporting cast have something to offer and are pretty fleshed out characters for short comedy. There are themes of death, friendship, jealousy, grief, love and hope. I hope this show gets another season as there is so much potential for stories and growth for all characters.
The writing is really clever and actors are all perfectly cast.
Back to the Outback (2021)
Fun for kids and adults.
I watched this with my 5yr old son and we both really had fun with this. I laughed out loud at so many of the jokes (that lizard killed me). I grew up in NSW so it was fun to tell my son about the animals what they are really like and that even though the funnel web spider seems nice in the movie, we don't play with them... the voice cast was fantastic and perfect for the roles. This was so much better than so many of the current Pixar/dreamworks talking animal movies out there. Plus it has an important message about the power of words and calling people ugly and how those words can effect a persons own perception of themself and worth.
The Midnight Club (2022)
Don't compare it to the other haunted house shows.
This is not meant to be a typical haunted house show. It's about teens trying to process dying through story telling. The story's are creepy and reveal things about the characters, so if you skip them, you'll miss the heart of the story. There is also the over arching story of cults etc. Which is a bit silly, but it's more about a being young person trying to distract yourself from death. I loved Christoper Pikes books growing up and this show definitely had some nostalgia for me being a teen in the 90's who liked a creepy story. I really enjoyed this show and it made me care for these characters.
First Kill: First Betrayal (2022)
Solid Vampire YA show
I would rather my daughter watch this than any of the twilight movies. Is it a cheesy vampire YA show?.. yes. But it's fun, has great strong female characters, a vampire relationship that doesn't involve stalking and some interesting family mystery drama. It was easy to watch over a weekend.
Foundation (2021)
Good hard sci-fi
I don't get the hate. This series has wonderful world building, with beautiful cinematography. The main characters all go through their own physical, emotional and philosophical journeys and are portrayed excellently by the cast. Apparently there are some gender and race switches from the source material, but less face it, if shows and movies were always true to old books, only white male actors would get to star In them. The story telling is a bit slow and can get confusing if you're not paying attention, but I still enjoyed the story. This is NOT Star Wars, this is old school sci-fi that covers themes how the action of one or a population, can effect the universe for future generations. Looks at the arrogance of leaders and them concerning more
About their own legacy than the welfare of the people. Plus the power of science and knowledge and how it can be used as hope or be the blame for populations.
Kim's Convenience: Friends and Family (2021)
Disappointing ending to a great show
I don't understand the last season. This was such a good show and the last season introduced some interesting little stories for each character that literally went no where. Then the ending was just somewhere between sad and meh. I wish they had done better in giving these characters that we learnt to love over the 5 seasons a better send off. Such a disappointment.
Kath & Kim (2002)
Australia comfort tv
Although set in early 2000's, this show is nostalgic flashback that I can watch over and over again.... and have. Each character is loveable, but flawed in their own way, with every relationship unique and somewhat realist. Everyone in Australia knows a Kath, Kim, Kel and Sharon, as well as a Trude and Prue. 16 years later, it's only gotten better with age and I still pick up jokes that I never noticed before, and after all these years, it is still my go to comfort show.
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020)
Fun musical comedy with heart
I didn't know what to expect with this show, but I have a love of musicals so I gave it a go.
What I got was a musical comedy seen through the eyes of Zoey (played excellently by Levy) who is given "powers" that let her see other people's inner most thoughts and Feelings through pop songs. What I didn't expect was the raw emotion conveyed through the musical numbers especially in regards to Zoeys terminally ill dad played by the wonderful Peter Gallagher. The supporting characters such as Skylar Aston, Mary Steenburgen, Lauren Graham and Alex Newell are also delightful and talented to watch as they perform musical numbers that only Zoey can see.
Absolutely worth a watch if you love a feel good musical with heart, that will make you tear up occasionally.
