  • Sorry to those who don't know how to suspend belief...

I feel bad for those who are leaving negative reviews picking apart what is scientifically possible etc. There's plenty of "scientifically possible/accurate" stuff out there, but that's not the point of this episode.

The premise is completely brilliant-the writing, acting, direction all built on that strong premise to deliver a super juicy and entertaining story (that's ultimately uncomplicated). It seems that most folks take issue with how ridiculous it becomes. Consider my argument here: imagine the mind of a bullied, emotionally stunted teenage girl, who's quite literally a mad scientist. Now give her the ability to create a supercomputer that can alter reality...of course it's going to be zany and ridiculous!

Rosy McEwen's incredible acting really helped play into the ridiculousness of it all. How her facial expressions were always topically "little innocent lamb" but had very subtle madness behind the eyes, or even the way she positions her face muscles would give anyone an eerie feeling regardless of what's occurring to be true.

I also believe why this works so well is because it's 50 minutes. If it were it's own feature-length film I can see some components of the story getting worn out-or one's suspension of belief getting stretched a little too far-but just like the funky confections they make in Bête Noire, the episode is best enjoyed when you know you're about to have a sweet treat with an out-of-character core.

I walk along the full spectrum of sci-fi and enjoy all forms. From Interstellar to Lucy to Solaris to The Core and back again- if you don't like something because it's not scientifically accurate or lack the ability to suspend your belief, you've kind of robbed yourself of experiencing the very premise of movie-making: entertainment.

Perhaps I have a better palate for "campy" media but this is one of my favorite episodes of Black Mirror full stop.

  • Highly enjoyable; but less than the sum of its parts

The series starts out as a somewhat shallow comedy, relying on cliches and haphazard grasps at relevant topics, but then fortunately develops into something with heart and authenticity.

I think it's almost entirely due to the immense talent of the cast, and how much charisma they bring onscreen. But the script is certainly lackluster more than half of the time, and there's no strong point of view creatively. While it's based on existing source material, a lot of the plot points felt too "convenient," or that they didn't make sense to realistically drive some of the characters' motivations. Which unfortunately gives lazy holiday B-movie some of time.

Despite its weak spots (that are certainly not bad enough to write the whole thing off), the series does capture some soulful moments and even though I'm neither financially comfortable nor struggling with a middle age marriage, I walked away with a strong understanding of it's thesis and tender feelings for the characters.

It's a really easy watch, so even if you're not a die hard fan of the cast, or relate to their problems-I think there's a lot on offer for the enjoyment of just about anyone.

  • Showcase of comedic timing.

Masterful interweaving of multiple fun plot lines, some of the best writing and pacing this season. What the episode lacks in plot substance it makes up for in wit, and more than a handful of genuine laugh out loud moments.

This is a lightweight episode that focuses on the quips. The scenes are quick, but the jokes-per-minute rate is through the roof- I'd go as far to say that the rhythm of the episode is evocative of Veep.

Definitely my favorite episode of the season so far, and would love to see the writers work more with this kind of pacing and levity, that showcases the actors brilliant comedic timing.
