The Brothers Sun (2024)
Tried until episode 6
The series features a talented cast, including mostly good actors who bring their A-game to the screen. Their performances showcase skill and dedication, adding moments of authenticity. However, the weak script places limitations on their abilities to shine.
The narrative lacks the dynamic elements needed to captivate the audience. It unfolds with a flatness that fails to create suspense or emotional resonance. The storyline feels drawn out, with scenes and content stretched beyond what is necessary, leading to moments of tedium rather than engagement.
A notable drawback is the film's reliance on dated stereotypes, which can be detrimental to its impact. Instead of exploring characters and plotlines in a nuanced manner, the movie resorts to clichés and preconceived notions, missing an opportunity to deliver.
Overall, it falls short of achieving the level of storytelling and entertainment one might expect from a production with such promising actors.
1899 (2022)
A true epic
With a price tag of 60 Mio Euros an apparently overpriced yet robustly failing effort to serve up a thrilling multilingual concoction of a nightmarish, titanic ghost-ship narrative meeting Lost on the last decadent cruise towards the epic maelstrom of stupid.
The series is a kaleidoscope of facial expressions featuring the grumpy, frightened, angry or shocked grimacing of largely unconvincing actors, frequently interrupted by pregnant or whispering pauses, an endless pizzicato of trivial dialogues presented against a CGI heavy background and framed by untimely and often unfitting music.
The only riddle here is how anyone can claw their way through all eight episodes without losing their heartbeat.
Speak No Evil (2022)
Either - or / because you let me
As your emotions will likely reign supreme after a tense and ultimately brutal 98 minutes. It might initially be difficult to decide whether you just saw another superficial provocation or experienced a slowly unfolding mirror reflecting overly domesticated humans who have replaced acute stress responses and genuine emotion with decadence and sclerotic repetitiveness.
The moment the movie could start feeling inconsequential, it shakes you and does not let you escape.
Watching trust dissolve into blindness and impotence will fill you with agony. Especially when you feel that some patterns could be your own.
Do not watch it alone.
Do not expect being able to sleep afterwards.
Nope (2022)
Nothing has yet been said that's not been said before. Then we watched Nope
The movie left us confused then triggered a search about its metaphysical aftermath. It took us a few hours to put the puzzle together and arrive at a satisfying interpretation we could all agree on.
Artistic, calmly percolating critique about publicity and money seeking superficiality and filth, laced with Medusan elements and reminding of Goethe's From the spirits that I called, Sir, deliver me!.
Very watchable.
Pamilya ordinaryo (2016)
Stressful. Very well acted.
Tough to watch yet no hyperbole. Living conditions framing the background to this film allow a fleeting glimpse at poverty in South East Asia's most densely populated metropolitan area where poverty is steadily increasing.
Both lead actors were so convincing I could not believe they were no exceptionally talented street children.
