Katrina Babies (2022)
Heartfelt and intimate
The first half of the documentary was very strong and we're introduced to people who have compelling stories about the trauma they experienced during Katrina. While it's a relatively short film it unfortunately starts to drag in the second half, while there are some interesting observations about the lasting impact that Katrina had on some of these people, it starts to feel more like a film someone made for an intimate community or family album and less like a comprehensive look at the havoc that Katrina wreaked on the youth of an entire city. There are some mentions about what happened to the youth on a larger scale but overall the film opts for more personal, heartfelt stories. Towards the end we're exposed to a lot of meandering shots of people just staring into the camera or laughing and dancing as if we're watching an ad for Cialis. I'm assuming the film felt an overwhelming need to imbue it's audience with a sense of hope towards the end but it came off more as a manipulative effort to cheer us up rather than a genuine look into the present or future. However I don't think any of these flaws detract from the value of this film because it's intimacy seems very intentional and meaningful and despite its meandering hopefulness, the heartbreak of this film is where the real marrow is found.
Stath Lets Flats (2018)
Amazing
Not many shows touch my funny bone like this one. It's kind of a very modern sit com in the sense that it is situational comedy but it's completely fresh. It doesn't play by the rules of any other sit com, and maybe that's just a British thing. This show makes you root for characters to get together, It makes you feel sorry for them, it makes you cringe at them, it makes you love them. The thing I appreciate the most is that it's a sit com but they keep the show serialized so everything the characters do have long term consequences for the show and that's not something you usually see in a show that's as silly as this one.
Seinfeld (1989)
Not bad
Is it better than friends? Yes. Is it the best sit com ever? Hell no. How I met your mother is better than this show and HIMYM has rewatch value. I loved watching Seinfeld the first time through but can I rewatch all the episodes? No. It's always sunny in Philadelphia is a better sitcom and it was inspired by this show. So maybe this is the citizen Kane of sit coms, doomed to be living in its own shadow. A show that walked so that other shows could run.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Uncut gems meets parasite meets eyes wide shut meets battle royale meets the platform
Very addictive. The most intense tug of war scene ever. This show will keep you curious, entertained and anxious the whole time. By the time the show is over you're left with a strange taste in ur mouth, mostly because the protagonist makes some very stupid choices that make no sense, this dude just keeps testing his luck assuming it will never run out. Anyways, this show runs back and forth from the depths of human depravity to the better angels of our nature. Definitely worth watching.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Felt forced
Vince Gillian once said in an interview that one of his favorite films was butch cassidy and the sundance kid. His love of westerns really shows in this film, and not in a good way.
One of the best things about the show breaking bad is that every plot twist and turn felt natural and it never seemed like the writers were making the characters fit the story. Instead, it always felt like the story flowed naturally from the characters' actions and decisions. With El Camino it's really obvious that Vince Gillian desperately wanted a western shoot out at the end. He kind of bent the characters to his will.
Why would a small time owner of a welding company risk his life by instigating a western shootout with a guy he has no beef with, for a meesly $1,800 after scoring the biggest break of his life? Because cocaine? There's no amount of rationalitization that could get me to believe that's anything more than cheap writing.
Also seeing Heisenberg in a bald cap was like a spit in the face.
