Reviews
Mystic River (2003)
Suspenseful, very sad and only ruined by the unhinged last few minutes
It takes a look at past friendships, betrayal between people who used to care about each other and how grief can impact someone's actions.
I probably would have liked more flashbacks to the men's friendship as children, contrasting it with the present, instead of just the few minutes at the opening.
Additionally, starting with Annabeth's outrageous and out of nowhere speech to Jimmy in the second to last scene, I found the final minutes unnecessarily tacked on, as if they couldn't figure out how to end the movie. I wish they had just let characters sit with the events at the end- not spoiling what happened- instead of trying to force a cheesy, artificial closure.
Other than that, worth watching even though it's quite lengthy.
Dead of Night (1977)
Unexpectedly disturbing, with very little blood.
Boy that got me good. It started out as a cheesy demonic ritual but became much scarier, even somewhat thought-provoking.
I don't want to give it away but I am VERY picky about my horror: not too gory, or corny, or cliched, I don't like any tired tropes about satanic sex cults; don't like goofy effects that soon look dated; don't like gratuitous violence; I'm bored with watching objects move on their own. And this scared me so bad I think I'm just going to look at only happy things for a while.
Not only at the end but by building the tension and emotion throughout, gradually and then to a pitch. I did not see the ending coming either although horror is usually so predictable.
Back to happy thoughts now....
Films of Hope: Neil Gaiman and Guillermo del Toro (2020)
Added a few to my list
Thank you :) should do these lists more often.
I don't know why it's making me write a whole review. It's just an eight-minute movie list. I didn't know Neil Gaiman and Guillermo del Toro were friends though, that's cool.
