Big Time (1988)
Tom Waits is great...
A must for any Tom Waits fan...but..."not for everyone." Waits is; strange, funny and a talented song writer, musician and actor. He sings, plays piano, and guitar over his all original material is this wild live show, with added video...I first heard him in 1979 on a college radio station, he's not top 40 material. I think he is great...read the lyrics to his song "Cold Cold Ground" and maybe you'll see what I mean. Most people can't get beyond his gravel-like voice, but those who can will know what a great poet/artist he is...usually musicians. It's a shame this is not been made available in DVD. It is out of print on VHS. I bought a used VHS of this concert/movie on ebay for around $30. I suggest buying a Waits CD like "Rain Dogs", or "Franks Wild Years"...or watching him act in "Down By Law, or "Iron Weed" before viewing this. You'll like him, or you won't. I believe Tom Waits is an American original...one of a kind.
The Ox-Bow Incident (1942)
One of the better movies I've seen.
In general, I'm not a huge fan of westerns, but this is not just a western. This is a story set in 1885 Nevada, and has to do more with human character, how people think, feel and act. Far better then your every day shot 'em up good guy bad guy yarn. Henry Fonda is the star and is believable as a cowboy, and Harry Morgan his side kick. They run into a little more than bargained for when they ride into town where Gil (Fonda), is looking for a gal that promised to wait for him. The parts played by Dana Andrews, and Anthony Quinn hold up well, as do the many Hollywood character actors who's faces you remember, yet names you forget. I think anybody who sees this can get something out of it, even children. It does have some violence, but made in 1943...no blood or gore like today's movies. It tells a story about good, and evil. It is tastefully done and one of my favorite movies. Well worth watching.
