Gulabo Sitabo (2020)
Good attempt at a different genre
I went into this movie with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Gulabo Sitabo is a witty comedy-drama, with Big B really stealing the show here. Amitabhji has acted out of skin in this movie, giving a powerful performance.
I would recommend this film, if you are looking for a witty comedy/drama and a light watch over the weekend.
Aarya (2020)
Sushmita Sen just about saves the show
Aarya starts off quite well, but is virtually impossible to watch all the way. Pros & Cons:
Pros:
1.) Sushmita Sen: She is absolutely gorgeous in this tv series, I have been a fan of her since Main Hoon Na, where she played a chemistry teacher and she absolutely nails it here, playing a strong, beautiful and independent woman
2.) If you are a fan of sub plots and side stories, this show might be of your interests as there several points in the story, where the story completely diverges and moves in a different angle
Cons
1.) Too flashy for its own good: Okay, I know that the family in question here are pharmaceutical big wigs, but a luxury mansion, Audi SUV's, rampant drug and alcohol use, extra marital affairs, flashy haircuts and all of this in JAIPUR? Seriously? That is slightly hard to believe
2.) Wayy too slow: This show starts off well, but it is an absolute slow burn that takes ages to progress, I tried to look for the plot online, so I could be saved of 8+ hours, but I was out of luck there (P.S: If someone has seen this all the way through, please let me know the end, haha)
Chopsticks (2019)
Average, not very memorable
This is a decent one-time watch if you are bored. It features some quirky, relatable and unusual characters. but alas nothing about this film will blow you away.
I've always regarded Abhay Deol as a fine actor and he lives up to the expectation in this film. There's an effort being made in this movie, to potray a side of Mumbai which is working class/not very glamorous and glitzy and I think that is done quite well. Overall, this is movie for the lazy, rainy days, when you fancy a light watch.
Mirzapur (2018)
Highly, highly entertaining
I ventured to watch Mirzapur because it came highly recommended from a very close friend whom I know to have a great taste in film and media. Anyhow, this show totally was quite enthralling, it truly captured the essence of the Bihar/UP region in India, I have spent time with people from that region and I could connect with the mannerisms of Kaleen Bhaiyya/Munna/Guddu in MIrzapur, so +5 points only for the acting!
The other 3 points are for the story which is truly unpredictable and engaging! It is hard to predict what will happen next, which is quite unique for a Hindi web-series.
I cut 2 points only because some of the scenes seemed like an over exaggeration. But Alas, you can't have everything can you! I am now eagerly waiting for Season 2.
Trailer Park Boys (2001)
Outstanding Comedy
I had no idea of the existence of this show, until I accidentally stumbled on it while randomly browsing through Netflix one evening.
I must say, this show is simply brilliant, the story writing, subtle jokes, sarcasm and dark humor are all very well blended in. I am on Season 9 now, every time I want to lighten up and have a good laugh, I crank up TPB! Bravo to the entire cast and crew and well done!
Gully Boy (2019)
Strictly average film
Poor guy wants to become a rapper, but society suppresses him, finally against all the odds, poor guy becomes a famous rapper. Inspiring story, but I found the movie to be a drag at times.
Total Dhamaal (2019)
An insult to the intelligence of Indian Film Viewers
I honestly saw this film just to spend some quality time with my significant other and that turned out to be one of the gravest mistakes of my life!
This film was nothing but pure torture! Full of silly slapstick jokes, the plot is weak and the same as Dhamaal 1, weak jokes, idiotic characters; The cast is full of A-listers and stars who I don't know why, chose to act in this film? Probably to make a few bucks to buy that new car or new flat.
I wanted to walk out at the interval itself, but my girlfriend suggested that we stay since we've paid full price for the ticket. After the completion of the film, she remarked that leaving early would have been a better option. Not sure what's going on here, I think the director was just like 'Y'all have a good time now' and let the actors do their thing.
