It (2017)
Good job converting Stephen kings HUGE novel into a movie
I liked this movie, it is a classic Stephen King book (not movie). Its set in Maine in the 80's, its a simpler time, there is a backstory that slowly unfolds to give you a solution which have been handy at the start and there is some omnipotent creature
I read IT 20 years ago, haven't picked it up since but I remember some of the big themes in that writing style SK used and they had to be added to this movie, with vary success.
First of all this movie is split it into two parts whereas in the LONG book they flick back and forth as their forgotten memories return, only remembering how they defeated Pennywise as kids 9/10ths into the book so they can use it now
The movie attempts the flashbacks and poor memory recall which is perceived as bad editing
Another was how Pennywise was able to accomplish so much carnage without anyone noticing. That's because of the whole manipulating your mind thing
For Movie makers this is gold as it allows them to make main players make stupid decisions and therefor keep the movie rolling on without blaming poor writing and reverting to the old obligatory horror movie ethos "lets split up"
This book came out around the same time as Nightmare on Elm St (which is referenced in the movie) with a similar theme using your dreams/nightmares/emotions. Its not that new now but this movie does a good job of it. Bring on part two.
Trolls Holiday (2017)
Enjoyed it to, total time because another HOME special included
The length is your typical 22/ 24 minutes but it has another Christmas movie tacked on. It has a low budget cartoon version of the characters of HOME discovering Christmas "Home For the Holidays" taking the total time to just over the hour mark. Didn't watch as HOME the animation was annoying after the quality and peppiness of trolls special
The Mist (2017)
Should translate to a good series but writing lets it down
Movie and book left many supernatural unanswered questions to be explored. But this series just went down the same old path of varied characters trapped together creating factions and drama lord of the flies style. It reminded me of The Dome. I think the producers were going more for Lost. It's budget clearly did not allow for supernatural beings and much of the mist seemed to be added in around actors with the skill of a first time photoshop user with the spray paint button. **spoiler** I think this scene sums up the poor writing. A main character loses a ballot and she must go into a mist filled area of mall to retrieve a radio transmitter knowing others died there. She is accompanied at the last second by a helpful bystander. He uses the radio and reveals he knows something and they scuffle and he is shot and killed. She runs back through the doors separating her from mist. It was like all the other characters forgot about her and wandered off. No one barricaded doors she had unlocked, they didn't take flashlight, protective clothing etc. she's in a mall, they have stuff. No one heard gunshot. I know if everyone makes sensible decisions the story often doesn't progress in a movie but sheesh it's hard to like characters when they make poor decisions. She told everyone the radio didn't work and they all said "no worries" and moved on. Anyway many other reviewers picked on poor acting. For me the actors had little to work with and I don't think anyone really knew where the story was going and the back stories to keep the series rolling along were in no way related the mist. Just everyday drama. Watch the first episode and the last and then never speak of it again.
The Princess Twins of Legendale (2013)
Not as bad I had hoped
When I saw the trailer accidentally on YouTube, I immediately showed my two daughters. We laughed at how this seemed like a rip off of a ahem Disney movie set in "something" dale Be aware this contains a spoiler at the end We decided to watch it with the express intention of making fun of it at every moment. Sadly for me, the plot is unique enough to stand on its own even though this movie takes themes from many other plots and was not bad, just cheap. Like Barbie movies, there is the obligatory Pegasus and fairies which seem to have no real purpose and has obligatory songs as it tries to cover all bases. Plot holes abound and it does seem like there are missing scenes as the movie suffers from poor editing probably due to budget The movies main drawback is cheap animation, cutting to 2D when it could for flash backs and even worse simply changing the frame rate when someone needs to move slow or fast, and body movement at the bottom of the 3D ladder The voice acting is average, in line with the budget, but I had to increase the centre speaker so the voices could be heard over the background music. As the credits rolled, this movie was clearly made some years ago and has only seen the light of day thanks to Disneys success. Be warned this movie contains no ice, just two sisters with brown and blonde hair None of this really bothers kids too much and my 7 year old did want to watch it again but that will only happen when I am not around.
spoiler alert concerning appropriateness, The queen dies early on by falling into blackness, she does NOT make a surprise happy ending return
My recommendation is to sit through Frozen or any other good movie for the umpteenth time instead
Awake (2007)
Disappointed with the unfolding of twist
Two problerms with this movie Key plot twist uncovering was that Sam had been at the hospital before, well derr, her Husband needed a heart, I am sure they had visited a hospital once or twice in the past, even by the meds she was carrying, I would have assumed she was a regular.
Plus twist needed more tightening and this would have been up there in the shock department with sixth sense etc. Mother appearing to her dead son was almost brilliant, but then her realisation was too laboured and explanation of the twist has too many holes. It really did seem she had time to get a real surgeon in the operating room early and avoid increasing chances of death. Never heard of the movie till I saw it on cable, Plot holes Married for 5 hours and husband dies and expect to rake in 100 million, courts would have a field day with that.He would already have a will as part of a large corporation. Brought her mail along, what a slip up after a year of deception One doctor for a heart transplant, its not lancing a boil! Expecting to get a cut, what sort of criminals are they! Hadens voice tone always sounds like he would rather be somewhere else
