1990: I guerrieri del Bronx (1982)
Don't miss this movie!!! Here is the explanation:
So bad that it's obvious it was intentionally made that way, and therefore must not be missed.
The first film, 1990: The Bronx Warriors, is a "serious parody" of cult films from that era: Warriors and Carpenter's Escape From New York.
Filmed in 1982, and the premise is set in 1990, which means it was a near-future back then. The Bronx is abandoned, and only gangs inhabit it, fighting for control.
The first thing I want to say - these films are AN ABSOLUTE MUST-WATCH FOR EVERY COMIC BOOK FAN!!! It's full of comic book iconography and self-parody.
Predictable dialogues. Comic book phrases. Literally comic book scenes.
On top of that, the Bronx gangs look like caricatures of the original Warriors, from Walter Hill. For a huge film fans - a small but quite obvious homage to Kubrick's Clockwork Orange in the "kung fu ballet" gang (lack of a better term 😂😂😂).
Then there are elegant gangsters who seem like a post-apocalyptic version of funky James Brown's sons 😂. Next, a band of cave people and a roller-skating gang with hockey gear (some might say Rollerball, do you remember that cult classic?). To make the funky symbolism even greater, they are led by Fred Williamson, a legend of Blaxploitation films of that time.
Furthermore, a gang of motorcyclists exclusively rides Hondas instead of Harleys, and the director made sure to show that with close-ups of the Honda logos on the bikes. Could parody be more obvious?
On top of all that, the main character looks like the love child of Conan and Bruce Dickinson
Oh, and not to forget - the name of the main character is Trash. Can the parody be any more obvious 😂?
(By the way, Mark Gregory, that is Marco di Gregorio, who plays the main character, had a pretty mysterious life. After another fantastic thrash movie trilogy titled Thunder, along with a few episodic roles, he completely withdrew from the world of acting, worked as a waiter, never gave interviews, and committed suicide in 2013, which went completely unnoticed in all film circles. No one even knew that he had died, until a big fan of these Bronx films decided to find out where Marco was, only to discover last year that he had committed suicide ten years ago, and his unmarked and neglected grave was found. Quite an original and eerie story).
In any case, as I said - I haven't seen a better trash movie since Bad Taste, directed by the later famous Peter Jackson, although these two films might be even better in the trash genre.
If you are fans of comics with a special focus on the Italian and even American comic book scene (symbolically, the film is an Italian-American co-production, filmed in Rome and the Bronx), then this is the film for you. The fight scenes are hilarious, the only thing missing is speech bubbles, and as the icing on the cake, in the sequel, Trash brings down a helicopter with .38 pistol shots (does anyone remember Rambo? 😂).
Don't miss it.
Once again - do not miss it.
Q & A (1990)
A hidden gem!!!!
This movie has it all- old NYC scenes. A corrupt cop story. Personal drama. Good guys which are not so good and bad guys which are not quite bad.
Nick Nolte is brilliant. There are not that many brilliant roles of corrupted cops such as his in this movie. Probably Harvey Keitel in bad lieutenant and Vic in Shield.
Armand Asante is stealing the show every time he shows up. Louis Guzman is my personal favorite. He does not have a lot of opportunities to shine in this movie but his heated conversation with Armand Assante is one of the best scenes in this movie.
Timothy Hutton is ok. Can't say that this is his best role but having Nick and Armand as a main antagonist and the most important supporting role (Assante), nobody would shine more.
Overall, very good thriller/ drama with all elements of a good movie. Dialogues are good, acting is superb, atmosphere and camera are really good.
Level 16 (2018)
Good premise. bad acting and dialogues
It doesn't have to do anything with the budget. Story is good, it is not Handmaids Tale but it has couple of similarities.
However, dialogues and actions in the movie are quite naive, acting is also bad
I've seen movies made with low budget, but having one budget does not necessarily means that movie has to be bad. This is bad performance and huge plot holes. Idea is good and narrative is quite promising. I'd even say that directing is good because today's directors lack of skills compensate by adding a ton of short shots combined with music, in order to create false feeling of "action".
This one is not. Camera is steady and good. However because of plot holes and bad dialogues (acting aside) I can't give more than 4.
Tidelands (2018)
there is no plot holes because there is no plot. Period.
Forced myself to end third episode. Must admit, first episode was somehow promising. Second episode failed to deliver and didn't develop a good foundation based on the first one. Third episode sunk big time.
Nice although not completely original plot. However, bad realization. Very bad. Acting is "stiff", dialogues are incredibly cliche, plot holes everywhere. I am not against sex in movies but here there were just mindless random sex scenes. Even those scenes didn't have any sexual tension.
After third episode I asked myself- where it goes? The answer is: nowhere. I might correct myself a little bit- there is no plot holes because there is no plot. Period.
Bad acting, cliche dialogues, story which is going nowhere...just giving second star for beautiful scenery in some scenes.
Paradise City (2022)
I tried. I really did
I gave this movie 35 minutes of my life. First, there are three brilliant actors in this movie so I thought I can't be they bad.
I was wrong. This movie ticks every cliche. Insanely stupid and stereotypical dialogs, acting like a middle school act...
Plot? There is no any.
Quite honestly, after initial disappointment in the first 5-10 mins, I thought- hey at least this will be "so bad it's actually good" type of a movie. But it isn't.
Skip it. Skip it. Skip it. I 2/19 just because if is beautiful scenery in the first 35 mins
God, who finance these movies???? Send some money over here. I could use it it.
Assassin Club (2023)
It'a, like, the movie with the biggest number of plot holes in a history of movies
I really wanted to like this movie. I really did. I set my expectations to low, because I kinda new that I should expect some kind of "killing time" movie, nothing what would make me think after the movie (or during the movie)
But I honestly don't know what is worse- plot holes or stupid dialogue.
The beginning was actually promising. However, as the movie start unrolling, we are seeing the more and more stupid scenes and some irrational things that even a five year old wouldn't do, but our main protagonist, highly trained assassin- is doing.
This is one of the worst movies I watched in last few years.
BH90210 (2019)
Don't stop. It's only getting better. First episode is WTF but then...
You ever watched Leo Di Caprio's Inception? Read and find out how I see it connected.
First episode was meh, watched it out of respect.
Second was... hmm.. decent, but still I wouldn't watch it whole, would change the channel, if I want fan of Beverly Hills 90210 back in a day.
Third was like, wait, this is getting interesting
Four... well this is GENIUS!
Honestly, now when I think of it, you can't get better reboot idea than this. If they just continued to do mid age characters from the original show, it would be reinventing the wheel. This way with mixing some parts of their real life with the fiction, and ON TOP OF THAT, "working" on actual reboot episode, you get the revolutionary TV show.
Revolutionary in a way that you are not sure what has taken as an inspiration firm real life, what is just a mod to their real personas, and what is a part of reboot. Like inception movie, you are not sure are you in dream or in a dream within a dream
Yes, I know, this show won't create even 5% of the hype what original show did, but I am pretty sure, in 5-10 years, this show will be taken as an example of trying something new. As an anchor in this reality/ mockumentary / reboot genre.
Just like the original show did, this one is also pushing the genre boundaries. I would so much love if I could see the season two, even better, see it love as one of the people on the crowd while filming 😊
