Undisputed (2002)
KICK BUTT
I got knocked up side the head on one side and slammed on the other. `Undisputed' was a knock out. This movie is what I like to call 'bada**'. A little too convenient in some parts but as a whole this movie delivers a solid punch.
Ving Rhames is the former undisputed Heavyweight Champion James "Iceman" Chambers, convicted of rape, stripped of his title and sentenced to serve his time in Sweetwater Prison. Sweetwater Prison? What is that all about? I guess we will never know. Once inside Chambers learns that Monroe Hutchens, played by Wesley Snipes, is the "undisputed" champ at Sweetwater. Hutchen has been the undefeated champion for ten years. As far as the James Chambers is concerned there can be only one champion, and that would be hi m - The Ice Man and he is out to prove it.
I liked Wesley Snipes' portrayal of the Monroe Hutchens. He had an interesting split personality of a ruthless, fight to the finished brusher that had an interesting calmness about him in situations that he knew he could not fight his way out of.
Ving Rhames' character was just strange to me. He continues to maintain his innocence throughout the movie just like a good prison character. However his demeanor is anything less than admirable. With Ving Rhames knocking people around proving that he is the strongest, baddest, hardest hitting sledgehammer walking the face of the earth you can not help but hope that he gets a major butt kicking.
I must clue you in on the happy little surprise character Marvin Bonds played by Ed Lover. I love Ed Lover ever since back in the day of Yo Mtv Raps when Mtv used to play music videos. His colorful officiating is just as hard hitting as the boxing. The final box match is brought to a hilt by the stylistic banter of the 'Lover'.
Undisputed is a full bodied entertaining hardnosed flick that will stimulate your mind as well as your emotions. Go see this before it slips away. That's my word for what's on the screen.
Antwone Fisher (2002)
A phenomenal piece of work[Undetailed spoilers]
The setup is that not enough of you have seen this particular movie yet. This is a devastating fact. The movie is Antwone Fisher. The man that is portrayed in the film wrote this beautiful piece. Oscar winner Denzel Washington directed and co-starred in this piece. Derek Luke did a phenomenal job as Antwone.
Here is the skinny. The movie is based on a true story about a man that was faced to deal with his child hood demons. While Antwone Fisher was a young sailor he was prone to violent outbursts. Mr. Fisher was very close to being kicked out of the Navy when he was sent to a naval psychiatrist, played by Denzel Washington, for a psychological evaluation. Breaking down the walls to get through to the truth became a struggle but young Antwone was in a race against time. The story within the story sends you through a tale that propels you into a whirlwind of emotions as the secrets of Antwone's life are revealed. Once Antwone finds possible reasons for the way that he deals with things as an adult the naval psychiatrist suggests that Antwone confront his past that caused him so much trouble. As part of the healing process Antwone begins the journey to find the family that he never knew.
Denzel Washington has made one of the finest movies that I have seen in a
long time. The way that the story weaves in and out of the past and present tense is nearly flawless. The emotions bring you to the brink without sending you over the edge. Once you experience this one you will be filled with emotion to the point that you may want to shed a tear. However it will be tears of joy for the triumph of a man. Fellas do go into this thinking this is just another chick flick. This is truly a piece that us fellas could probably learn a thing or two from. We may not have had a life that Mr. Fisher lived and we may not be dealing with things in such a violent manner but we all could learn a lesson about redemption and forgiveness on the road to healing.
The bottom line is that you would be doing yourself a disservice if you do not support this movie. This film has substance and a real plot with twist and turns. This movie is an entertaining, thought provoking, intellectual piece. Check out a little something that would be a positive addition to your life.
