She Chef (2022)
8/10
Excellent documentary about an outstanding female chef in her early career
5 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary starts with the 2018 youth national Team Championship which the Austria team won and where Agnes is part of the team. Hence she is already at the start an excellent cook.

To further progress she decide to do internship in three world class restaurants (2 or 3 stars restaurant) over the next couple of years.

Beside beautiful pictured insides from the working environment in those high class kitchen, the documentary covers topics like the impact of COVID in 2020/2021. Other big topics are the future plans of Agnes and how those are in conflict with the typical work life balance / conditions in top class restaurants and also in general the role of women in kitchen who are underrepresented in this industry anyway. All topics are integrated in a nice balanced way.

The movie closes with her last restaurant where she (for the moment) finds her perfect environment combining outstanding cooking with a team friendly atmosphere and especially conditions where she feel 100% part of the time without any interference with her gender.

The documentary is entertaining and well paced and snapshots behind the scene are intimidate and as said already of outstanding picture quality.

I would definitely recommend this documentary to anyone who is general interested in (high quality) restaurants and/or the role of women in the high class cuisine.

The Marvels (2023)

Good for a potential Season final but not as standalone cinema movie
8 November 2023
Just left the premiere of The Marvels, First of all I'm huge fan of the Marvel universes and have seen all movies but lack the time to watch the numerous amount of series on Disney+.

In this movie that's the first time it's definitely an issue as the 2 new marvel heroes are basically there without any introduction (and also later on there is only a very minimal summary of the past). Hence without the background from Disney+ series I couldn't really follow most of the discussions and it was basically not possible to build any relation to the characters. In previous movies there was already sidekick/references to the series but this time in my view it's a new level. That's the first negative point in this movie.

Apart from that neither the jokes (but that's was also the case for most of the younger marvel movies), nor the villain nor the action really got me.

Ultimately this would a really good (TV/stream) season final but for a MCU movie it's lacking a lot and is one of the weakest MCU movies.

Note: movie has a mid credit but no end credit (unless you count a sound as end credit).

Good summary of the foundation of what currently known as Baden-Württemberg former Südweststaat
25 July 2023
The movie is a mixture of scripted scenes replaying what (likely) original happened, original footage from this time and recent interviews which comments what has happened in this time.

The movie summaries the creation of what is today known as 'Baden-Württemberg' or formerly known as 'Südwest Staat' after the Second World War. It explain why the one region Baden was mainly against the fusion with his neighbors and what role the other 2 regions and his presidents, the situation of the people at this time and the American and French occupying forces played at this part of the history.

As a (in my view) side story the movie also covers the role of the 'Frauenfunk' which is a special radio program moderated by women and mainly for women, which played in an important role for the situation of women.

My main critic is that this side story feels and probably is a little bit disconnected from the main part.

All in all I found it interesting and entertaining even though I don't live in this area.

Would rate it 7,5.

Intensive drug and family relationship film
22 July 2023
The movie starts Josef who is an heavily alcohol addicted men who live in the house of his mother in the first floor. His mother died in a home for aged people without even being noticed by him. His sister visits him and tells him the news which he barely notice in his situation. She asked him to sell the house since she needs the money, which he declines since it's his home. To save money she needs to move to the house with her young daughter Nina. Despite being alcohol addicted Josef tries to establish a relationship to Nina and be a good uncle. This is roughly the first half of the movie which is a sometimes a little bit harder to watch but plays an important part for the great second half of the movie, which without spoiler should be noticed as being completely different and lovely (keeping in mind that this is still a drug movie).

I definitely recommend to give this movie a chance because it's great cinema!

Good documentation about the development of Turkish music in Germany combined with the general situation of (German-)Turkish people over the decades in Germany
14 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary follows the development of Turkish music brought by immigrants from the 50s until 2010, covering multiple music styles from traditional Turkish music, over wedding music, disco-folk up to Hip-Hop and RnB. At same time it shows also how extremely difficult the situation was (and probably still is) over the different decades and what challenges the Turkish community (later also there kids who are born in Germany) face including racism.

A lot of musicians famous for the decades and music styles are interviewed and explain what influenced them connecting the different parts.

All in all well made documentary which spots a light on a music which even though sold big times plays until the modern time a niche role in Germany.

Note this movie has a short after credit.

No must see but if you pass half the movie it gets bette
21 April 2020
The movie starts has overall a very slow pace, you can argue it's on the boarder to boring. This adds in with an extreme long introduction of the few families which are portrait and their live in fort Murray. I was asking myself quite often where is this movie leading to.

The movie than gets a change around 30 minutes before the end, when you see how the life of the families changes. Here the movie gets better and the long introduction of the families starts to pay off as you are more connected to the changes happening to them. (Without spoiling to much).

All the movie in my view tries to relativ neutral document the live in the oil sand industry and why people do it and what price they pay. The viewer itself should judge what he think about it.

For me personally the pace of the movie is much to slow. I can understand everybody giving up latest after 15 minutes.

Seeing until the end it's ok but no must see in my view 7/10 as the topic itself was new for me and the movie covers quite a long time hence a bonus for the efforts.

Well rounded summary of sustainable food aspects
20 April 2020
Introduction (without Spoiler): My first review (so far only scored), don't worry I don't have any connections to the stakeholders of the movie. The movie just didn't had any review yet on IMDb but I think it's deserve one. Other remark I've have watched quite some documentaries about this topic already hence I can relatively good compare but I am probably not neutral about this topic (supporter of sustainable lifestyle and food).

Summary (without Spoiler): The documentary summaries aspects of sustainable eating like less meat, more regional, more seasonal, more organic and less waste of eatable food. Focus is on area (square meter) footprint of typical western citizen compared to what target footprint. To illustrate this the documentary pictures 3 families who try to change there daily nutrition with higher focus on such aspects. In parallel the documentary explain the different theoretical aspects in small breakouts also showing certain ways how to improve. The speed of the documentary is rather slow (compared to the amount of pictures and data in some other documentaries) making it very convenient to follow and get overwhelmed by data.

Due to the amount of topics covered in 90 minutes it lacks obviously details of the aspects covered. Unfortunately also on the main theme hence I would all in all score 8,5/10, but compared to what I have scored 9 already I think a 9 is reasonable. I can definitely recommend this movie especially as entry point to this topic area.
