Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
A Horrible Ending to a Horrible Season
Season 7 was bad. Season 8 was horrendous. A very unfortunate way to end what started out as a great series. If you haven't watched it yet and are considering doing so, don't. This isn't an episodic show, where you can just enjoy it until it jumps the shark and walk away feeling reasonably satisfied. Unfortunately, the dumpster fire ending ruins everything. Aside from GRRM's books, if they ever come, the GoT franchise is dead.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
Wildly Inconsistent Characterization, Abandoned Plot Lines, Deus Ex Machina, Plot Armor, Anti-Climactic Endings
Subverting expectations is one of the easiest, laziest things a writer can do. Yet subverting expectations seems to be a major priority for these writers. Apparently, they think that's what GoT is all about. They are wrong about that.
What made the first 4 seasons of Game of Thrones great was the WAY it subverted expectations. Originally, GoT subverted expectations by allowing characters to suffer the natural consequences of their personalities and choices within the framework of the established rules of the world in which they live.
In other words, the show initially set itself apart simply by refusing to "play god" via the hack tropes and tactics generally employed by hack TV writing (i.e., the VAST majority of TV writing). Story events were the LOGICAL OUTCOMES of persistent CHARACTER TRAITS and earlier CHARACTER CHOICES (that were consistent with those traits).
However, in the last two seasons, and in season 8 particularly, the writers have thrown that story discipline out the window. As a result, the quality of the show has nose-dived. The show has become a shell of its former self. Frankly, it has become a laughing stock. And deservedly so. With SO MANY BROKEN PROMISES, how else could fans feel aside from BETRAYED?
The writers also seem clueless when it comes to satisfying endings. The Night King gets one-shotted. Ghost does not get a parting pat on the head. Cersei suffers death by pebbles. Etc.
I just don't understand why nobody at HBO stepped in to stop this complete train wreck. Such a waste.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
Did HBO Honestly Believe People Would Like This???
Game of Thrones has suffered a STUNNING NOSEDIVE in quality this season! This episode was utterly absurd!!
*When Dany was joyriding her dragons over the enemy, did she forget she was at war?
*How could she POSSIBLY not see the big fleet of warships from the sky, when they could obviously see her?
*The scorpions were IMPOSSIBLY ACCURATE when the writers wanted them to be, then moments later, IMPOSSIBLY INACCURATE!
*Dany could EASILY have circled back and destroyed that fleet after it fired on her, since the guns clearly only pointed in ONE DIRECTION. But No! ???
*Cersei could EASILY have killed Dany, her queensguard, and her last remaining dragon as they stood TOTALLY EXPOSED beneath battlements lined with scorpions. But Cersei decides not to do so for NO REASON!
I could go on and on, but you get the point. This show has, amazingly, gone from one of the greatest shows ever to truly cringe-worthy, fan fic, "gone Hollywood" absurdism. WOW!!
