Okupacija u 26 slika (1978)
Memories of Youth
I watched this movie as a teenager, and my only memories were the beginning, the end and Steve Zigon wearing a suit and walked down the stairs. Boring beginning, shocking end and I kind of felt Zigon's performance a little bit too affectatious. Now decades later having experience life, I can now appreciate the movie more and understand it better and can say it is a much better movie than I have been thinking about it all along. It is a story about the WWII history in a beautiful Croatian city, about the fight against fascism, inhuman cruelty, sacrifice, vendetta and revenge. It's a lot more enjoyable than my teenage mind could have digested.
La battaglia d'Inghilterra (1969)
Very mediocre
1. Everybody wore the British uniform but they could fight against each other without any problems because they just knew who the enemy was, even in the dark;
2. The general flirted with the lady in the headquarter in front of everybody;
3. The general performed combat actions and gave commands to the entire RAF mid-air;
4. The French air pilot got killed and his friend did not even cooperate to find out spies by just obeying orders to stay in the barracks.
5. Man and woman made love during airstrikes, too much hormone?
6. The German infiltrator is too sentimental to kill, it's okay to portray him that way but the story is very poorly constructed.
7. Who the hell is firing at whom in the air combat is also beyond me;
8. As someone who worked in a German company I can assure you the Germans have very strong accent when they speak English.
9. A captain could freely discuss classified information with a general without any problems.
I know I am being too picky, it's just a silly movie but cannot help, it's just a poorly written story, there are way too many holes in it, although they may have a strong cast with good looking actors and actresses.
Die Brücke (1959)
Very real
I had the same impression as the other review. It develops very slowly, seems like uniquely German, very rationale without emotion, just telling a story without even a twist, even their language does not reflect their emotions. Only at the second half when the actions really happened did it show more of the human side, the story is believable but is unlike the modern German movie which I felt somehow emphasized how wrongly treated the German people were, these teenager did invoke my sympathy towards them.
Flammes sur l'Adriatique (1968)
Entertaining to an extent
As least I watched the whole movie, the ending is not that great, falls flat and seems just ordinary. It describes the Yugoslavia navy when the German invasion occurred.
Tri (1965)
One of the Best Yugoslavia Movies I've ever watched
I've searched for many years for a good Yugoslavia movie. Seen many but they are mostly mediocre. It's so good that I wonder how I found this just now. Its quality definitely is right up there with the likes of Valter Brani Sarajevo, Most and Otpisani. The suspense, the way the camera reflects the emotions of the characters without long and boring dialogue, and the novelties of the stories are truly gripping. The callousness of soldiers treating human lives, the resignation of the captives for their fate, and the chemistry between a man and a woman are so real that they beat the usual scenes of dozens if not hundreds of partisan holding their machine guns killing puppet-like German soldiers by a mile.
Ad Astra (2019)
My 2 cents
Saw lots of the bad reviews and I basically agree to all of them about the ridiculous plot. I'll add one more, why did the Dad stay in Neptune for 30 years and all it took the son was 79 days to get there from Mars? Why were they waiting in Neptune forever if they wanted to explore the universe for exterritorial lives? People were also asking why the high rating, to me it's because of the stunning visual and the interest about the type of sci-fi movies. If I watch a lot of movies of this genre and have an acquired taste I may not be this kind.
Algorithm (2014)
It has enough suspense
And technological details that interest me for most of the duration, but I really don't understand in the ending where the hero's friend betrayed him (he said he had a plan but I have no idea what that is other than he wanted to save his own ass) and and guy from the beginning wanting to hire him. The interrogation which leads to suspect's death is a little bit bordering on the unbelievable. The actors' performance are okay enough for me.
Father and Daughter (2000)
Dad betrayed the girl!
How could he? Broken marriage? Failing health? Financial woes? Or was he a criminal on the run? It leaves too much for one's imagination. There are just too many possibilities. Surprisingly, with longer and longer films and TV dramas nowadays, an 8-minute clip can tell way more than all else without telling you anything. You don't even get to see the looks of the people, but that also leaves so much for the audience's imagination. You can plug in any image you want, simply because it describes the very essential relationship, as long as human beings exist. The eternal love between a father and a daughter, whoever he or she is, wherever or whenever they live, whatever they do or language they speak, it just does not matter. Is there any short animation better? Can't think of any and don't believe there is or ever will be.
Csillagosok, katonák (1967)
One of the best war films
The best I've ever seen I guess is Band of Brothers,and this one is right up there. Good war films seem real, closer to real life, you see it and you know this is how it should happen, even if you have never experienced it. "good" people do some bad things and "bad" people do some good things. Guess there are more degree of cultural freedom in Hungary in those years to let this kind of film come to light.
I watched it the first time without moving my eyes off of it, and then I watched it a second time. It feels really beautiful, so vast is the background and the storyline is so unique. The third time I tried watching it, almost all the scenes feels so bloody that I cannot watch it.
Valter brani Sarajevo (1972)
This is the best war film ever
I am a Chinese of the 60s. Agree with everything my fellow Chinese says. The only other film/TV series close in my opinion is Band of Brothers. Not mentioned above is the fact the beautiful music which is such an integral part of the film. The great thing about the film is they don't picture the Germans as stereotypical demons, which makes it more convincing to the audience. I did some research on Yugoslav's part in WWII and would really like to know more about them. Unfortunately, the materials in Chinese and English are very limited. Really want to know about the musicians but no info on them is available either.Also just found out that all the German officers are played by German actors, which makes it very convincing. What is so pathetic is the hero was only ranked #9 of the best Serbian Actors & Actresses... Just dug out the history between the countries within Yugoslav and I can understand why they don't think that highly of the film like the Chinese do.
