Brightburn (2019)
Yet another threat for yet another cinematic universe.
The film had me during the first half, there were some pretty neat concepts here that just became predictable during the second half. The lazy attempt at subverting our expectations kills of any chance of real surprise since the script obviously limits itself to 2 possible endings and they're both cliche as all hell.
Great concept, awful execution and even worse of an ending.
Barry: Chapter Seven: Loud, Fast, and Keep Going (2018)
Another episode about great acting where the acting of the cast is just as great.
This episode's had the biggest payoff so far, honestly, for a show as meta on acting as Barry is, you get massively invested in the situation of the main character. Bill Hader delivers one of the most powerful performances of a show that just won't stop repeating how important it is to throw the entirety of your will at something you're passionate about, and Bill Hader's Barry is his own passion to throw himself at.
Barry: Chapter Three: Make the Unsafe Choice (2018)
The pacing is picking up and the humor doesn't stay behind.
This episode was full of amazing surprises, it genuinely feels like the plot is going somewhere now, the set up is right, the tiny bits of comedy pay off with a lighthearted and sometimes crude tone.
Barry: Chapter Two: Use It (2018)
An episode where the tone changes by the minute.
This episode jumped from one of the funniest scenes so far to one of those scenes that dive into the realism this show wants to aim for. I feel like this episode is a good example of what lies between the fantastic and raw writing of this show. Props to Bill Hader for his accurate performance of a socially awkward guy without enough energy to transform into someone else... yet.
Barry: Chapter One: Make Your Mark (2018)
Wonderfully above average, violence doesn't come without humor.
I didn't expect this show to have a stable plot as I went in almost completely blind (having only read the summary of the plot), and what a wonderful surprise I got when this first episode turned out to be better than I expected. The humor is a bit dark but the show has its wholesome moments as well, the few bits of violence are well made and as it's said in the trivia: it's not romanticizing any of the gore. Give this pilot a watch if you want well executed humor with tiny bits of realistic violence.
