Hope Island (1999)
Great show!
This show is truly excellent! I never saw "Ballykissangel," which it was based on, but I really like this show. Not only is the scenery beautiful, but the story lines are good & the acting makes things seem real & Hope Island really seems like the kind of community in which I could live. It's too bad that such a good show couldn't have lasted longer!
Not all the stars have been seen much, but each one is featured at one time or another, and each one also does a great job of bringing his/her character to life. Even though the show is primarily about Reverend Cooper, not all the stories are focused on him. Yet his relationships to each of the main characters and others are portrayed well and are clearly seen.
The Royal (2003)
My Sunday Evening Fave!!!!
I don't really care how many times B. C.'s Knowledge Network repeats this show - I have to watch it Sunday evenings. If that's not possible, then I'll tape it & watch it later. I'm not totally sure what it is about this show, but there really is something about it that draws me back week after week.
Now on the Knowledge Network we were left several months ago with Dr. Ormerod's tragic accident, but it sounds like he's alive - albeit barely. It'd really be terrible if they decided to kill him off after having just married him & Jill! I'm really very excited to see what actually happens & am waiting the resolving of that cliffhanger with baited breath!
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Oh, my!
This movie is one of my all time favourites! It's a great movie to spend on a rainy day - all 5.5 hours of it! :)
The acting is excellent and the characters are believable. It's easy to find one or more to relate to.
The scenery is wonderful, too, and really shows things the way they were back then. It does not show as much as some other versions of Jane Austen films do, but it shows that there was a definite class system and that people, for the most part, knew their place in the world. People did not question this, as a rule, and certain forms of etiquette were observed, according to class and place.
I'm not a person who's for a class system, but in the days of Jane Austen it worked, and I think that it definitely helps to add to the charm of her world and, in particular, this version of this beloved novel.
The Campbells (1986)
Excellent!
To me, this is one of the best shows ever. I'm sad that it wasn't on longer & that I wasn't able to catch the original run through in its entirety due to being away at college, where there wasn't cable. However, I'm now able to see all the episodes & it's renewed my enjoyment of the show.
This series featured some of Canada's best acting talent and was a real showcase for them.
This show is historically accurate as well and really brought to light many of the things that pioneers had to go through in Canada's harsh, yet beautiful, landscape. It also brought forth that, despite some people holding on to class, people worked together and, eventually, most people realised that we're all the same and that we're all equal.
I really like how the show treated all people, no matter their creed, race or what-have-you, the same. No one was prejudiced against, and stereotypes were done away with.
This show is something that everyone can enjoy, a true family show, and that is truly lacking these days. If I was able to get DVDs of this show, it's one that I would most definitely spend my money on.
The Big V (2005)
The Big V
For another person who's committed to chastity 'til marriage, this documentary was very important & a real encouragement. The people who'd been interviewed for this were open & candid & very free with sharing their thoughts & feelings on the matter. It did include one Muslim girl who'd had an operation to repair her hymen after losing her virginity in order to protect her life and a doctor who performed such operations, but the rest of the people, including a woman who gave away her virginity when she got married for the first time at age 61, were all virgins, at least when the interviewing started. Some had gotten married before the interviewing ended, & so they talked both before & after their giving away of their virginity. I, for one, was happy to see this topic brought forth in such a positive way & without any mockery. It showed, too, that not just Christians or other "religious" people have chosen chastity, but a homosexual man as well as some people whose religious beliefs I was unsure about talked about this choice as well.
