Doom Patrol: Danny Patrol (2019)
Incredible episode
As a white, straight, cis-gender person, my first look on this episode is "wow, it is pretty fun". We have a non-binary queer STREET with intelligence, capable of teleport people, etc, and it works on TV.
But lets pay attention in the layers here.
Sometimes we can believe in aliens from another world who can fly and stop bullets. This is not so different than a sentient street. Not at all, if we keep our mind open and we understand that they work as symbols.
While Superman is a symbol of "Hero", of "Individualism", Danny the Street is quite the opposite. Danny does not fight crimes, Danny help misfits, outcasts, etc. And he just run a Cabare 24/7 where all people just enjoy. This is "Collectivism". None of those people cause any harm to the society, in fact is the opposite. Today we consume media, propaganda, movies where everyone is "perfect", with the right color, shape, behavior, etc. A small % of the society became the majority of the main characters in today's blockbusters. What if you are not like them? You can fell be less... normal... right? Now multiply movies with all sort of media broadcast, the cultural context, etc.
This subject is complex, tense, deep. Like Larry Trainor. Probably the most important LGBTQ+ character in TV based on Comics. He may have a glimpse of what is "be happy" when we dream about sing in front of all those people.
It is impossible, for me, fully understand some symbols, because I never had any problem related to my color or sexuality. But with ART we can taste different scenarios and open our mind to other people's problems.
And understand our role in all of this.
Of course, you may disagree with me. Perhaps the show was lame, or not fun at all. Or just "political". But today everything is political.
Now, magine how many people just need some kind of "danny street" to be happy or just... exists...
