Monster (2003)
or "How To Win An Oscar Thru Weight Gain"
Beautiful Charlize Theron gained weight for this part, thereby assuring her Oscar win -- the Academy loves when actors gain weight for a part! Hey, I'm the first to admit that Charlize looked shockingly like Eileen (and that ain't good...) but that's where her talent ended. I didn't see a performance - I saw a young actress begging for a nomination. However, the story is interesting (if you didn't follow it on the news) and Christina Ricci is brilliant. Ricci's subtle, rich performance has been totally overlooked by Charlize's fake teeth and padding.
Truly Madly Deeply (1990)
Perfect...
Perfect dialogue and perfect acting. This is a beautiful study for those interested in writing for film... or simply those of us who long for a real love story. Absolutely cliche-free. Very un-Hollywood. This was Anthony Minghella's first movie and, in my opinion, his best. It was made for less than $700,000. And for that 700K you'll see the finest acting and the most realistic and beautiful writing in film.
The Sweet Life (1989)
Hip and Funny!
"The Sweet Life" on HBO's Comedy Channel was a very hip and hysterically funny sketch/talk show starring singer Rachel Sweet. So few homes had cable in '89 and '90 -- and even the houses with cable didn't usually carry the Comedy Channel(now known as Comedy Central) -- but if "The Sweet Life" had been seen by more people, I know it would have had a HUGE following. Rachel was a fantastic, downtown-hip host and the sketches were just fantastically funny! Jon Stewart, who was a writer on the show, was often featured in the sketches. Even the guests on "The Sweet Life" were before-their-time -- like Queen Latifah, Crowded House, Colin Quinn, Paul Reiser, Sandra Bernhart, Nick Bakay, etc. My friends and I watched "The Sweet Life" every night and it was the main topic of conversation the next morning! Loved, loved this show!
The Opposite of Sex (1998)
The BEST film I've seen in a long time...
Funny, touching, sharp, insightful -- "The Opposite of Sex" is fantastic! Don Roos, the writer/director, is a genius! The dialogue is fast, brilliant and FUNNY! I hate myself for having missed "The Opposite Of Sex" when it was in theaters but I'm so grateful for the wonderful evening the DVD gave me last night! Buy it! Rent it! See it! If you like funny, hip and smart... you'll adore this film!
Anastasia (1997)
Beautiful!
Beautiful, touching and engaging film... and the ONLY animated movie that is a must-see for every young girl! Anastasia is written as a strong, intelligent young woman who can (and does) defend herself and carve out her own destiny. And Anastasia is drawn to look like a real girl and not the "Barbie Doll, no rib cage women" famous Disney animation! My daughters adore this movie... and so do I!
