The Forsyte Saga (2002)
Wow...
I can take or leave some historical dramas but The Forsyte Saga had me hooked. The series was a sumptuous delight and I will miss my Sunday night's viewing.
The story was brought to life wonderfully, with great direction, amazing costumes and brilliant acting. The real gem of the series was Damian Lewis and his portrayal of Soames was second to none. Also worthy of mention were Gina McKee and Rupert Graves, as Irene and Young Jolyon respectively. These three actors are among the best in Britain.
To anybody who has an interest in British Society at the end of the 19th Century, this is for you.
I will be very glad when the second series is shown, and I can only hope that it will be as good as the unforgettable first.
Enigma (2001)
Good...but not great
I saw this movie last night for the first time after devouring the book and loving it. I have to say I was quite disappointed with the movie. I didn't feel that the characters were developed enough and they lacked the depth to make one identify with them. Crucial parts of the book were overlooked and while I understand the difficulties in making a book into a screenplay, this just didn't make the grade.
If someone was to watch the movie before reading the book, they might be satisified (although I doubt it). I would not recommend reading the book before seeing the movie as I just don't think it lived up to is potential.
While the subject matter is fascinating, the movie left me feeling flat. The movie jacket calls Enigma a romantic thriller. I have to say, I didn't see too much romance and while the book had me on edge to the very last page, the movie didn't thrill me too much.
