El mar (2000)
Freaky
14 April 2001
I went to see this movie in Spain with a friend of mine. He said that it was about the Spanish Civil War, and I thought, "cool, I'll learn something." OH MY GOSH what a FREAKY movie!!! Starting with kids watching a fascist firing squad blowing away communists to one kid beating another's head against a rock until the kid died, this film was gory crap that made one really wonder what in the heck happened to this country (Spain, not the USA). Unless you feel like feeling dirty and getting really disgusted with what happened almost a century ago I would strongly avoid seeing this movie.

Kick Butt AWESOME
3 November 2000
I just saw this movie opening night with a packed theater. From the opening scene to the credits it was a visual feast, (and I'm not just talking about the butt-shots-aplenty). There was never a moment that was dull, or dragged, or wasn't just plain cool. Casting was PERFECT! Crispin Glover, of Back to the Future fame, was THE creepiest bad guy that wasn't just some guy the Angels could hit a few times and be done with... he seemed truly unstoppable. Lucy Lui was very cool, but so was everyone else... this movie is definitely a winner. It was like True Lies á la the Matrix but with a wry sense of self-mockery of the genre (action movie/girlies-to-oogle movie/old TV show to movie movie/modern self-mockery of a genre movie... you take your pick). The soundtrack kicks booty, costuming is übercool, and the situations the girls are put in really make them shine. 10/10 it's a good group movie.

God's Army (2000)
Certainly different from what one usually sees.

I just saw this movie with some friends in Columbia at the Wynnsong. It's a good movie and the acting was great, and I felt that it was a fair depiction of missionary life. The questions it raises about the church are ones that don't have to be answered in the ~2 hours you're in the Odeon eating popcorn. In fact I agree with the reviewer who said that he felt it was watered down (missionaries' pranks on each other are often way more mischievous in real life, but of course all in good fun). The editing was good, the script didn't lull, and the conversations didn't seem contrived. The relationship between the main character and the blond sister missionary was interesting since Elder and Sister missionaries aren't permitted to form any relationships beyond casual friends anyway, so that whole thing was supposed to be awkward anyway. All in all, a good film. It will be interesting to see whether ticket buyers will choose it over the latest Adam Sandler flick.
