Tycus (1999)
A fine mess
I actually enjoyed Tycus, if not for much more than mocking the production values. Dennis Hopper was just fine, although I wonder if he would have signed on the project had he seen the special effects they used. And furthermore, what was with the scene with the ninja?? That was just completely out of pace. Perhaps someone came up with the bright idea mid-shooting. Oh well, This movie is great if you're drunk and need a good laugh. Cheers.
The Hunley (1999)
Truly Breathtaking
Even the initial moments of this movie had me in awe. What a way to start. The cinematography was awesome, and practically indescribable. The sheer hopelessness of being trapped in such a confine was beautifully captured, and therefore, this movie is definitely worth a watch.
Gods and Monsters (1998)
Simply Beautiful
Having read comments posted by others, I'll be short and spare you the inevitable retelling of what everyone else has said. Instead, I'll point out that what surprised me was the adaptation of the book. A wonderful job was done, all the tones were captured masterfully from the novel and brought to the screen. McKellan and (especially) Fraser were magnificent, and showed depth truly from the book. (Redgrave was great as well, but I cannot compare her character to the one in the book, as it has been changed.)
Alive (1993)
Beautifully shot, yet slightly inaccurate
The filming of the story of the rugby team was a gallant undertaking. The movie achieved a stunning visual ambiance, and one did feel as though they were there. However, there were glaring omissions. The men remained remarkably fit and clean throughout the whole ordeal. There was a cleanliness and dignity about the whole situation that made it seem a little odd. This opinion comes from having read the book first, which addresses this disaster from the perspectives of both the survivors and their families. As always though, it is impossible to include the entirety of a book into a feature-length film, which explains the lack of an investigation in the movie (as well as the Hollywood style oversimplification of characters into heroes and followers). Regardless, I am still touched by the film.
