Braveheart (1995)
Perfect!
perfect!
Beautifully shot and terrifically acted account of the legendary William Wallace, a Scottishman who led his people by example out of the chains of bondage of the English Kingdom in the early 1300s.
This movie was a labor of love for Gibson and it shows. There could be no better movie. Though some complained of the gorish nature of the film it seems necessary to get across to today's modern viewer how completely bleak the world was in that time.
I could go on for pages, as some have, but ultimately the best description is...Perfect!
The Adventures of Sebastian Cole (1998)
Interesting but ultimately a let down
This well regarded (critically) movie seemed very promising as a character study of young Sebatian Cole and his Step "father/mother", the pre-op transexual Hank/Henrietta. While there certainly were interesting issues and very well acted roles the film is ultimately let down by its own story line and character.
We come to seriously dislike Sebastian, our "hero". He goes from an engaging young man who is lost but obviously intelligent to a young punk who makes decisions for himself and his life that are totally illogical and out of character. Very well acted by Adrian Grenier but sadly unlovable.
Hank's character is the one we come to enjoy and admire. In a rough rural area to chose to become a woman is a unique and obviously dangerous decision, especially when you take into account his wife and her 2 children. A courageous decision that doesn't appear to detract from Hank's/Henrietta's very strong morality and view of what is ruight or wrong in life.
A bold attempt of a movie but by the end I just didn't care.
Try again.
Stealing Home (1988)
this is actually my favorite movie.
I have never seen a more touching tale of a boy becoming a man, and it spans 2 decades to get from start to finish.
The full spectrum of actions dealt with are amazing, the loss of a father, the loss of a dream, the loss of a true love, the separation from all that was "holy" to this young man and his attempts to reclaim his life after years of avoiding everything real.
All this told with a backdrop that is flawless and accurate. (it takes place in Philadelphia, my hometown)
Truly a touching movie, and my favorite drama.
The Boys in Company C (1978)
Follow a group of men from boot camp to the vicious realities of war
Never had there been a film that captured so well the bonds of men in war. The relationships that develop seem completely natural and in no way forced by writing.
This movie accurately depicts the struggles that face all men in grave situations, with and without friends at their sides.
