Ramona (1988–1989)
brings back memories
4 January 2005
I was thinking about this show recently and I decided to see if I could find some episodes for sale. I found some on Amazon and I just finished watching "Ramona the Patient" a few minutes ago! It was really fun to realize that I could still hum along with the theme music and remember the cat book report that she does at the end.

This show was on in the late 80's, and it aired on Sunday mornings for a while if I remember correctly. I was about 6 and I loved it because I was always a huge fan of Beverly Cleary books. The show itself is pretty good, and it does remain loyal to the stories. It's also fun to see Sarah Polley in such a cute role, as she's known to play very serious, somber roles these days.

Yay Ramona!

Summer of Fear (1978 TV Movie)
I should have known better...
3 July 2004
I grew up reading Lois Duncan books, and I always thought "Summer of Fear" was pretty cool. Therefore, I decided to take a chance and buy the movie off ebay. But ugh-- it's sooo bad! I wasn't surprised, as most '70s movies like this are cheesy, but I had still been hoping for something a little better.

First of all, the actress who played Julia was horrible. I always imagined her being a TON creepier, not just having a slight, fake, southern accent. Also, am I the only one bothered by the fact that not only did Rachel's brother have a crush on Julia, his supposed FIRST COUSIN, but Rachel was encouraging it? What the heck! Was this considered OK in the '70s?

Everyone commenting on the ridiculous packaging of the DVD is right. The picture is creepy, showing a girl's face which is part skull. That is the scariest thing about the entire movie. The ending is supposed to be scary, but it's extremely hilarious instead. SIGH... I should have known. Oh well.

Further, I was very disappointed by Wes Craven and the producer's commentary. I only listened to the first half hour or so of it, but I was really hoping they would poke a little fun at the movie and be honest. Instead they act like they produced and directed an Oscar-worthy film. Gimme a break!

All in all, this movie is slightly entertaining due to horrible '70s hair, incestuous family members, Fran Drescher as a teenager, and the dildo type thing that Rachel finds with Julia's stuff. Enjoy!

Girl (1998)
Yeah, the book is way better
11 June 2002
I agree with Sophie08 (right below my post). I fell in love with this book when I was 14 and was SO super-excited to watch the movie. While I did enjoy the movie, I definitely felt that it was cheesy and didn't really encompass any of the "magic" in the novel. I hate Dominique Swain as Andrea...actually the only character who I felt they cast correctly was Summer Phoenix as Rebecca. All in all, Girl is an entertaining movie but there are sooooo many cringe-inducing cheesy lines-- mostly within Andrea's voice-overs, which, I may add, do NOT come from the book! Definitely read it to get the real story. :)

entertaining & funny despite what's been said
24 June 2000
Ok, so many reviewers are bashing this movie, but for the majority of normal movie-goers (which is most of us) "Irene" is very enjoyable. Jim Carrey is at his best with his "physical comedy" or whatever it's called, and the concept of his having 3 black sons is really amusing. Yes, the film does have some shock value type stuff that may get old to some people, but I thought it was all pretty funny, and so did the crowd in the theater I was in. So if you enjoy raunchy comedy and Jim, go see it!

Wish Upon a Star (1996 TV Movie)
it's a disney channel movie that's GOOD!!
24 June 2000
While baby sitting I would sometimes be forced to watch Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel, but when this movie came on the DC one time, I didn't mind. Wish Upon a Star is really entertaining, because the two actresses start the movie off as certain characters (one is the older, bitchy, popular sister, the other is the younger, nerdier, nicer one) but then take on each other's characters when the younger one wishes on a star to be her older sister. So really, each actress was trained to play the other's role, you know? It's an interesting concept. This film is also WAY less sappy and more tart than most Disney Channel movies. Hey, it mentions virginity! It's a pleasant surprise, and the girl from "Roswell" plays the older sis.

S.F.W. (1994)
weird
24 June 2000
if you're expecting a neat, tidy movie that actually goes in chronological order and never gets confusing, SFW isn't it. Plus, Reese Witherspoon is billed as a main character and she's hardly even in it. I guess the idea is cool (I'd like to read the book) but I didn't really enjoy the movie. But so f**cking what?

country music and "hipness" blend together in a great film
24 June 2000
I rented this movie last summer after having never even heard of it, I just picked it up because it had River Phoenix in it and he was, of course, quite the hottie :) Anyway, I've never been into country music but I LOVED this film! It deals with that whole scene and has great songs in it-- especially the one that Samantha Mathis' character writes and sings at the end. Plus the movie has one of Sandra Bullock's early performances, which is great. And yes, River also does his part to make the film very watchable! If you haven't watched The Thing Called Love, go pick it up-- you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Teen Witch (1989)
cheesy CHEESY fun
19 June 2000
This is THE CHEESIEST '80s movie you will EVER see and that's why it's so fun to watch. I mean, it's just horrible! Especially that way cool "I like boys!" song. And who can forget Kiki singing "Top that, top that..." All I can say is that if you're bored and this movie comes on the Disney channel, get ready to laugh hysterically and be glad the'80s are over.

Fear (1996)
good actors + cool story + rollar coaster scene = good movie!
16 June 2000
This is a perfect movie for people who enjoy suspense, but don't mind if the film is not entirely intellectual or whatever. Mark Wahlberg is great to look at (so is Reese Witherspoon for the guys) and the story - though done before - is very engaging and watchable. The chemistry between David and Nicole before he goes wacko is great, too. I recommend this as a good film to rent for a "night with the girls" or if you are just in the mood for a thriller with real good looking people. Plus, Fox seems to put this movie on TV twice a year, as it was just on last night, and was on in August of '99. ENJOY!!
