King of the Ring (2002)
Once again it was good but not great...
King of the Ring disappointed again right from the start. Let's be honest it had a lot to live up to after last year's Angle vs Shane McMahon match. The first match was RVD vs Y2J which had a lot of missed spots and some bad selling. RVD won as Y2J jobbed again much to my disgust...** The second match was Brock Lesnar vs Test which saw the 'Next Big Thing' continue his meteoric rise to the top and beat the dreadful Test. Not a great match...** Third was the match of the night - Hurricane vs Jamie Noble for the Cruiserweight title. Two solid performances and an awesome top-rope neck breaker from Hurricane ensured this was a great match...**** Next was Eddie Guerrero vs Ric Flair which was a waste of Eddie's talents and was quite crap. Overall...* Next was Trish vs Molly Holly...DUD Next was the KotR final between RVD and Lesnar which was a mismatch of styles but a good match with Lesnar crowned King and rightly so...*** Main event: HHH vs Undertaker. This could have been awesome (see WM16) but was not great at all. The end saw a lot of stalling as if something (nWo anyone?) was supposed to happen but didn't and to end the main event with a schoolboy roll-up was cheap. Poor stuff...** So, get it together WWE cos people who aren't big fans are not gonna hang around to watch much longer.....
Memento (2000)
Amazing
This film is quite incredible and is quite possibly the best film since The Shawshank Redemption. Amazingly scripted and wonderfully put together, each question mark the viewer has about the film is gradually discovered as the plot twists it's way backwards from end to beginning. A second viewing is almost a necessity to really appreciate the clever plot and fine performances, especially by Guy Pearce who excels himself as the man who cannot create new memories after being brutally attacked in his own home. It's hard, as with all great things in life, to get across in words the true excellence of this film but everyone should give it a go at least once. I guarantee, they won't be disappointed.
An incredible journey - the first 10/10 since The Shawshank Redemption
The Last Broadcast (1998)
It's got nothing on The Blair Witch Project
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** This film tries to be something oh so clever but falls a long way short. The fact that the whole thing was shot to look like a TV documentary just made the whole thing incredibly boring. It's quite incredible that the film makers could keep cutting back to the same monotonous people time and again building up very little suspense in the process. The character who was helping them find the Jersey Devil, Jim I think it was, was terribly overacted and overplayed and the repetitive scene replays increased the boredom factor causing the viewer to lose any interest they had in the outcome of this movie.
*SPOILER ALERT*
Much as the final death was pretty disturbing, the whole premise of making the filmmaker the actual murderer was horribly misjudged and was the final nail in the coffin.
This film is absolutely terrible and should be avoided at all costs. Even the truly terrible BWP2 is preferable to this rubbish.
Planes, Trains & Automobiles (1987)
Quite simply the best comedy ever
This is my favourite comedy ever made by a long chalk. John Candy and Steve Martin work together sublimely to produce the funniest pairing ever to grace the silver screen. John Candy was the ultimate comedy actor and a great loss to everyone and Steve Martin has such a pedigree that the film could not have been better.
If 11 out of 10 were possible it would have my vote!
Body Melt (1993)
Not even Ian Smith can save this one!
This is a film about a corporation which, for no apparent reason, is testing a body-enhancing drug on the local 'Ramsey Street' like yocals in an Australian community.
A man drinking bleach in the opening 5 minutes?!?!?!?! This was gonna be one bizarre schlock horror experience from the off. A severe lack of storyline and any continuity really reminded us all of why Australia is not a name readily heard when discussing great movie moments.
I realise this is low budget but could they not have at least found a body builder who didn't sound like a chipmunk?! Even with Ian Smith (Harold from Neighbours) having a pivotal(!) role as a doctor involved in the trials this film is one big joke from start to finish. Even the video cover has a picture of him with his left ear cut off when it's his right that gets cut off in the film!
This nearly overtakes Twin Dragons as the worst film ever! A resounding 1 out of 10.
