The Contract (I) (1999)
not great but likeable
12 May 2000
The acting here is weak at times, but the story is fairly interesting. This is a low-budget film with some likeable actors. The camera likes Johanna Black, and she does a good job in the lead role, showing a soft side to her boyfriend, who gets dragged into the mess, while doing a decent turn as an action heroine. The story has its weak points, but I think it may be a sign of things to come from Black, much as Above the Law was for Steven Seagal (not that she's going to be an action star). In fact, there are some similarities in the two stories. I gave it a high score, because I liked it despite some wooden acting in the smaller roles and one or two problems with the writing. If felt like a Hong Kong Jackie Chan or Jet Li movie, where you just ignore the bad parts and enjoy what's left (hopefully it's more than half of the run time--in this case, it is).
