Great film!

I was expecting a pleasant bit of romantic fluff, but instead found this movie to be hilarious, hot, poignant and well-acted. The humor is all about the difficulties we face in communicating with each other, fears of coming out, of taking risks. The romantic content is passionate and believable. And the ultraviolet Julie Christie number is not to be missed.

Not much of a movie
25 September 2000
The Straight Story is about as interesting as your average after-school special on tv, but much, much longer. The movie contains a few interesting human-interaction moments, and a lot of nice shots of America's heartland - but neither of those are enough to make this a good movie.

The cast did a fine job of acting, but that can't rescue a movie that doesn't have much of a story to tell. What many reviewers have described as the film's "subtlety" is better described as glacially-paced sentimentalism.

A lovely and well-acted film.

Great work by the whole cast; definitely a character piece, and set against a lovely backdrop. Hattie Morahan is luminous at times in this coming-of-age story about a fifteen-year-old English girl in India, and Naveen Andrews does a great job playing a handsome, self-absorbed poet.
